  • Firefly: The DVD set you must buy.

Can't say enough good things about this show. From the pilot to the last episode, it is strong all the way through. Each episode got noticeably better as it went on. Just when you thought that there was no way from them to top the previous episode, they did. The Character's are some of the best I seen. They are so interesting in their interactions. The dialog is top notch and extremely witty. Some episodes are non stop one liners that will have you rolling on the floor while other episodes can be quite chilling or dramatic. This show has it all and I truly think it something that can be enjoyed by everyone. It doesn't suffer from the same sci-fi stereo-types, in fact it goes against them somewhat. I can almost guarantee that you will like this show. Like I said, it has a lot of appeal for a wide group of people. Give it a shot, you WILL NOT be disappointed.

    Here's a generic editoral review from Amazon.com

After you've seen all 14 episodes of Firefly contained in this smartly packaged DVD set, you'll be begging for more. The sad irony is, series creator Joss Whedon's ambitious science-fiction Western (Whedon's third series after Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) was canceled after only eleven of these 14 produced episodes had aired on FOX, and its demise was woefully premature. Whedon's generic hybrid suffered an inaugural setback when network executives preferred an action-packed one-hour premiere ("The Train Job") over the intended two-hour pilot "Serenity" (oddly enough, the final episode aired), which provides a better introduction to the show's concept and splendid ensemble cast. Obsessive fans may debate the quirky, semi-fallible logic of combining spaceships with direct parallels to frontier America (it's 500 years in the future, and embattled humankind has expanded into the galaxy, where undeveloped "outer rim" planets struggle with the equivalent of Old West accommodations), but Whedon and his gifted co-writers and directors make it work, at least well enough to fashion a credible context from the incongruous culture-clashing of past, present, and future technologies, along with a polyglot language (the result of two dominant superpowers) that combines English with an abundance of Chinese slang.
What makes it work is Whedon's delightfully well-chosen cast and their nine subtly-developed characters (a typically Whedon-esque extended family), each providing a unique perspective on their adventures aboard Serenity, the junky but beloved "Firefly-class" starship they call home. As a veteran of the disadvantaged Independent faction's war against the all-powerful planetary Alliance (think of it as Underdogs vs. Overlords), Serenity captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) leads his compact crew on a quest for survival. They're renegades with an amoral agenda, taking any job that pays well, but Firefly's complex tapestry of right and wrong (and peace vs. violence) is richer and deeper than it first appears. By the time we've gathered tantalizing clues about Blue Sun (an insidious mega-corporation with an as-yet mysterious agenda), its ties to the Alliance, and the traumatizing use of Serenity's resident stowaway as a guinea pig in the development of advanced warfare, it's painfully clear that Firefly was heading for exciting revelations that never came to pass. Fortunately, Whedon was developing a Firefly movie as this DVD set was being released in January 2004, so the ultimate fate of Serenity's crew remains to be seen. In the meantime, these 14 episodes (and enjoyable bonus features) offer everything you'd expect from the creator of Buffy: action, drama, humor, hints of romance, suspense, fine acting, film-quality direction, dazzling special effects, and ample proof that Fox made a glaring mistake in canceling the series. --Jeff Shannon
    .
Like I said, give it a shot. It's only 35 bucks and you get 14 episodes. Hell, 2 movies will cost you that much. All, the episodes are pretty good so that's alot of value.

    Firefly DVD

Also, for those that are interested, the DVD's sold so well that there's going to be a feature film called "Serenity" released April 22nd 2005. All nine members of the cast have returned and principle filming of the movie is done. They're just finishing up effects and editing and whatnot. Come this April it's going to be a very exciting time for Firefly fans!

Well, I had borrowed my set out to several friends and I haven't watched an episode in about 6 months. Alot of those friends now have their own sets and I started to rewatch mine again. It just kinda rekindled my love for the show I guess.

I learned about it because of continued glowing endorsements on Sci-Fi message boards and what-not. I finally decided to make the plunge and buy a set. I'm glad I did.

I got it solely on the recommendations of the good people on this board. I finished it in a week, including the commentaries, & haven't seen it since as my 2 brothers & now my step-dad have borrowed it. If I get lucky, I may get it back around Christmas.

Would definitely recommend anybody with an interest in sci-fi to buy it.

Heh, that's great that your whole family is getting into it.

I actually watched it from the moment it aired. I was actually waiting to see "John Doe" which came on afterward. My wife and I became instant fans of "Firefly" and stopped watching "John Doe" after a few shows. We just got lucky to find it with NO thanks to FOX and their ridiculously small promotion for the show.

I really hope the movie does well because I want more, either movies or a return to television. I just don't want it to end!

I hadn't heard of it all to you lot started trying to prise my money out of my hands. There's been absolutely no advertising at all over here for it. Absolutley brilliant that enough people have bought the DVD's to encourage a chance to be taken on the movie.

There really hasn't been any advertising here yet either. The official trailer doesn't get released untill Jan 14th during the Elektra movie. I hope it odes well. If it does then there supposed to be a trilogy made. The tv series is unlikely as FOX is holding on to the rights for it for the next 10 years. Oh well, I'll take whatever I can get!

I actually meant for the TV series/DVD release. The first couple of places I asked about it where like 'Huh, what are you waffling about?' I just really hope that 'Serenity' is released over here, but I wouldn't be suprised if it was either released straight to Video or I'll have to wait and import the DVD eventually

Ohh OK, I remember seeing the commercials for Firefly on FOX but it was on at a time that I had to work so I didn't pay much attention to it. Serenity is supposed to get a world wide release so hopefully they'll show it close to where your at.

Same here. Friday nights at 8 became sacred.

What was weird was that the very first time I watched Firefly (the very first episode that was aired, "The Train Job" I think) I was getting ready to go to the store because I wanted to get back in time to watch John Doe. I left after the commercial break when they discovered that they hijacked medicine from that town that needed it desperately.

I made it a point not to miss the next episode and I watched every episode after that. When I read that the series was gonna be canceled, I was crushed. After that last episode ("Serenity") aired, I was telling myself "That can't be it. There has to be more. I need more."

April 2005 can't come soon enough.

That drives me crazy that they showed the episodes out of order. Serenity being the original pilot an all. The Train Job is good but Serenity provides much better character introductions and sets up the Firefly universe much better.

Too true. The opening scene with Mal and Zoe during the war was great setting up those two characters.
