After downloading the new update my xbox keeps shutting down by itself due insufficient ventilation.

What should I do?

Contact xbox is what I would do, I guess it is what the new 360 Slims do to protect itself instead of the red ring of death.

I also heard laying them horizontally helps the fan a little bit more, but it might be just a myth.

That's a little funny. I have an original 360. It's been slowing down but never had issues with games until final fantasy 13-2 two weeks ago. The most I could ever play was 40 minutes at a time and the 360 would freeze. A lot of the time it froze after 10-15 minutes. Get the update tonight and played it for 4 hours without freezing. Probably just a lucky coincidence but interesting since you are now having issues.

I went through 6 xboxes. 6. Fought for five but none got covered under warranty. Went to ps3, haven't had a problem with it. I'm so done with the 360. Although I'll be getting both "ps4" and "xbox720". Yeah, I'm a gamer. Lol

I'm going to take it to repairs my warranty expire, so I have to pay for it. The Cpu fan stop running this morning.
