  • Wii U - anyone own or have played one?

I like the Wii, it's great for my kid, nieces, etc. I love Mario games as well, one of the better franchises in video games IMO.

I'm reluctant to plop down the money for a Wii U, especially as it seems they have not taken off at all. Has anyone had a chance to play one, or own one?

I also own an Xbox 360 with the Kinect. I'm not sure that the Wii U would enhance my life enough to buy one.

Unfortunately, I have played one and it wasn't a good experience. There's nothing impressive about the system at all, man. If you're not the biggest of Mario fans, there's zero reason to get one. The competition isn't even out yet and already it's losing 3rd party support.

Sony is supposedly showing the PS4 next week at their hardware conference. I would wait and see what they have to offer before getting Wii U.

I have one and I absolutely love it, and I consider myself a hardcore gamer (I own a 360 and a PS3 as well). I think the Gamepad is going to be the future of gaming (until VR) and it's definitely worth the money. Give it some time, and the Virtual Console will catch up to the 3DS eShop, and more third-party software will come to the console.

Don't let the naysayers who don't actually own one influence your opinion too much. I think the Wii U is definitely worth buying, and I'm excited about it's future. If you like mario, they've already announced a new 3D mario (like Mario 64 or Galaxy) so you'll definitely get your Mario fix.

Having said all that, if you only want to purchase one console this generation, I would wait until the Xbox 720 reveal.

Thanks, it's good to get both sides

I think I'll wait to at least find out about the new PS and Xbox. I'm concerned with some of the things that are rumored about both, such as not being able to buy used games.

If anyone else has anything to add, please do!

While I don't actually OWN one as you mentioned both my brother and my dad own one. And they are complete garbage. Huge waste of money.

This system is not an upgrade from the wii at all. Graphics and gameplay are the exact same as the wii. The only difference is you are now getting this gamepad controller which has pro's and cons' to even needing. Sure it's nice to be able to still play on it if someone else wants to watch tv. However when you break it out to that point what's the difference between that and just owning a tablet with games on it? And a tablet has way more other capabilities than this gamepad controller.

I suppose if you are into the gamepad controller then it may be worth the money. However in no way shape or form should the WiiU cost $300 for only an 8 GB system or $350 for a 32GB system. I might would actually like the system if not for this outrageous price. I'll just stick to my wii that I never play instead of forking out another $350 for just a gamepad.

Call me bitter but I play all three systems and this system does not have the capabilities to cost that much. I think it was just a scam to try to keep up with the next gen systems. It's the same system but called something else. And now the games also cost $10 more.

Why pay $60 for Madden on Wiiu when I can pay $60 for Madden on 360 or PS3 and get a better all around game with better online support?

Oh and as one other mentioned I suppose if you are die hard Mario then you have no choice.

The WiiU has pretty much the same specs as the 360 and PS3, so the graphics should be the same as those.

Could've fooled me when I played it. I didn't notice any improvement to the wii.

Maybe the problem was my brother plays Nintendo specific games like Mario. There is really only so much you can do with those types of games. Or at least with Mario brother.

I suppose something like Mario 64 on wiiU with an open map could have improved graphics and play. But I haven't seen anything like that on there yet. My brother doesn't play Madden so I haven't seen it on wiiU to compare to 360 and ps3. But even if it compared you are still lacking a good online community to get me to drop $350 on it.

I know not a single person that owns one.

Also, I read an article that said they sold 57, 000 consoles in January, which was the worst 1st January sales for a console ever.

Seems like a wait and see if it does anything type of device.

Figured I would quickly bump this thread and see if anyone else had any new stances on this console?

I'm usually pretty against Wii and the gimmicks. I still have no desire to use that Gamepad controller and have grown tired of the motion. I actually gave my Wii to my brother. But my main gripe for last gen Wii was I never really got into the game selection.

However the WiiU is slowly starting to put out a better collection of games IMO. And for X1 I'm really not interested in any games the rest of the year until Arkham Knight comes out in October.

I'm considering getting a WiiU not that Mario Kart 8 releases in 2 days. And I was also interested in Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and the New Mario Brothers U. Super Smash Brothers is also releasing in December.

It's not a console I would build a huge collection of games in but I could kill tons of hours on Mario Kart alone. My main concern is I wasn't too crazy about the motion control for Mario Kart on the Wii. So if the WiiU is going to be the same I'm not sure I'm interested. Especially if it's with that clunker Gamepad. I just figured I would use the standard controller a lot.

Anyways just wondering anyone else's opinions? I still think $300 is over priced for a lesser console. But like I said the games for PS4 and X1 are going to be lacking for a while longer.

Oh and since the forum has changed since this thread was started maybe the Mods could move this thread to the entertainment section?

I figure it would get more views there.

I bought the original Wii and barely played it. Nintendo wasn't going to fool me twice. I heared that Nintendo is already working on a new console to catch up to the PS4/Xbox one

That's not a true statement. They are sticking to software believing that they have a stronger lineup on the way. That's already evidenced with the 1.2 million copies of Kart sold over the weekend. And at least half of that is believed to be new consoles.

I didn't hardly ever play my Wii either. But the last Kart I didn't like much. Mario Kart 8 is amazing though. And the online play is great. Much better servers than the Wii got.

Playing Kart online against 12 players is as competitive as any online game I have played.

I expect smash Brothers in December to be the same.

But like I said before you shouldn't buy the console for one game. The rest of their lineup doesn't appeal to everyone.

I expect the WiiU to completely compete now though. And I don't expect a new console from Nintendo for years.
