Even though I'm stuck at work and likely won't be able to watch (and I've surprisingly not seen any of the Best Picture nominees yet), I'm still extremely interested and I have my ballot made up.

Discuss the Oscars here. What were your favorite movies, performances etc. from the nominees this last year?

Who deserves it more? Who got snubbed?

I have American Hustle winning Best Picture, Scorsese winning Director, both of the Dallas Buyers Club guys winning and Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Lawrence winning for the ladies.

Took home 7 awards tonight. Geez. That movie alone slayed my Oscar picks. I only got 11 of 24 right.

I can't imagine that movie is that good. I think it's because it's kind of different and any time you have something "kind of different" the Academy is all over it.

Everyone loved Wolf of Wallstreet and American Hustle and yet neither film took any awards home. What's that about?

The Oscars aren't usually about how likeable a film is. The acting awards are pretty straightforward, but best picture is usually decided by whichever film pushes the right agenda. I think they are seen as more "powerful" than the others.

That's not a knock on the winners, as they're usually great films.

True. I think it was going to be obvious that Gravity would take any and all production statues home tonight. I wasn't sure about Cinematography and Directing though, but mostly the former due to the shear amount of CGI in the film.

I think people that watch the Oscars or expect them to base their decisions on how "likable" a film is will be extremely disappointed every single time. Most of the comments I heard from people that saw Wolf of Wallstreet just said they thought it was entertaining and they liked the performances. Well, that doesn't always equate Oscar glory.

When you have films like 12 Years a Slave (the Academy loves movies like this) and Dallas Buyers Club (another type of film the Academy loves), you're going to be hard-pressed to beat out anyone involved in those. That's why I straight up picked McConaughey and Leto to win the Acting awards with little thought. Everyone thought Leo would win, but no. Those two guys transformed themselves into something else for their roles in Club. Leo's performance, from what I've seen is not really far off from some of his previous ones.

Also, you have to take into account that aside from politics and trying to make themselves look like humanitarians and human rights equalizers, the Academy is also about popularity and money. When you have a category like Animated Film involved and any time Disney is involved, they win... it becomes rather obvious. I'm sure The Wind Rises is a much better film than Frozen, but none of those other movies had a chance. They just weren't going to win, even if The Croods was better (I don't really agree with that, but some might). I'm actually surprised (barely) that Saving Mr. Banks didn't take home Original Score solely based on the fact that Disney is a character in the movie.

I didn't watch the Oscars, as I generally think award shows are popularity contest not a sign of what was actually the better(best). Maybe the Oscars are different, I've never seen it, and from what people say of it, I'd guess it's the Hall of Fame for movies.

But being the Astronomy nut I am, I paid attention to gravity a bit. Still haven't seen the movie, but Space.com kept us up to date on the awards. I know 7 is nice, but I'm more happy that a Science Fiction film finally won an Oscar. According to Space.com no other has.

I gotta see this movie.

It was good, action from the start to the beginning. Oscar worthy? Not even CLOSE!!! It was a 3D movie for cryin out loud!

By the way, the Great Gatsby was the WORST MOVIE I have ever seen. Ever. PERIOD! My wife and I had to leave in the middle , just couldn't take it anymore!!!

I never watch these. I just like to see the pictures the next day about all the dresses that fail and who shows the most skin.

I've agreed with about 5-10. "Crash", "Departed", "Rocky", "West Side Story", etc.

There have been plenty of sci-fi movies to win Academy Awards, and several have been nominated for directing and picture in the past. It's just that Gravity is the first one to take home a Best Director win. They normally win everything having to do with visual effects, sound, editing etc (like Gravity also did), but lose to some other film in the more "major" categories. They almost never have acting nominations either, but it has happened before. See below for a major example:

I don't think a film being filmed in 3D has anything to do with it or should hinder a film's ability to get Oscar nominations. For instance, Avatar was nominated for 9 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Director. Heck, District 9 pulled down a nomination that same year. Avatar didn't win those major categories, but it took Cinematography, Art Direction and Visual Effects (obviously). Avatar was specifically filmed in 3D and Sony developed a new type of camera specifically for the film. So being in 3D does not disqualify a film from an Oscar nomination. Especially now that there are a LOT of films that are doing it. The Hobbit had nominations this year and it was in 3D.
