  • Top 10 video games of all time!

I'm bored at work and was thinking of games I used to love playing growing up. So I thought we could do a thread on greatest games.

There are two ways this could go. Everyone could provide their personal list. Or we could compile and maybe vote and make an agreed upon list.

I'm thinking for now just list your top 10. I'm curious to know what everyone's favorite games are.

I would like to think my list compiles across platforms but off the top of my head probably my all time favorites are mostly Nintendo games. Even though I don't even own any Nintendo consoles now.

This is not going to be easy

    Here goes

(For series I think I'm just going to do an in general because I can't think of which ones specifically I like most.)

    1. Mario Kart I used to drain endless hours into this series
    2. NCAA football series Until last year I played every year for months
    3. Wayne Gretzky 3D hockey So much fun and I enjoyed this more than NBA Jam
    4. Mario Brothers The original
    5. Mortal Kombat Die hards can debate version. I like the series in general
    6. Tiger Woods Golf Only high quality golf game I can think of to ever exist
    7. Skyrim Longest I have ever spent in a non sports game
    8. Final Fantasy Series (I haven't played all but loved the ones I have)
    9. Madden Not a personal favorite but belongs on the list.
My actual favorite football game is NCAA Quarterback Club 98
    10. RBI Baseball Back when sports games were so plain and simple and
we were still amazed by them

So there's my list. I may edit it as I think of something I missed. Can't wait to see the real die hards scrutinize my list about what I missed.

And that didn't come out at all how I formatted it. So I went back and bolded the games so hopefully it's readable now.

Can't think of listing them in order but some games I liked in no order would be:

    Super Mario Brothers
    Mario 64
    Mario Kart
    Legend of Zelda OoT
    Dark Cloud
    Halo
    Golden eye
    Diablo 2
    Warcraft 3 (The RTS)

I know I'm missing some current games but there are some older ones I enjoyed

      My Top 10
      1. Ratchet & Clank series I loved the humor, the open worlds, and the crazy weapons/gadgets.
      2. Metal Gear Solid series I really have only played MGS4, but that game itself was awesome. I've never seen better cinematics in a video game. Heard great things by diehards about the earlier MGS games.
      3. Sly Cooper series
      4. Jak n Daxter series
      5. Super Smash Brothers on Wii
      6. Call of Duty series
      7. Star Wars Battle Front I & II
      8. Madden series Madden 12 is my personal favorite. Not a fan of madden 13 or 25.
      9. Spyro on Playstation. I don't know why it was so entertaining but there was something addictive about it.
      10. Crash Bandicoot on Playstation

I can say for the most part, most of my list is more modern games than oldies. I couldn't have just 1 number 1, as I love both equally, like a parent and their children.

1A. Halo franchise: Besides Halo Wars and Spartan Assault, played every Halo game and read every Halo Novel I could find. And I enjoyed all of them. In my opinion the single player in Halo is unmatched by any shooter. Halo's story is like that of a very good RPG. It's music is Oscar worthy, acting is great. Few flaws with this series all around.

1B. Mass Effect series: IMO the best Action-RPG out there. A great story, good voice acting, great character development. This is the only game where I purchased every single DLC, from top tier DLC like Bringing Down the Sky/Lair of the Shadow Broker, to character skins. Supposedly they are gonna release the trilogy on X1, I'll be the first in line to buy it.

        2. Mortal Kombat: The only fighting game I like. I've loved this franchise since the first time I played it on the Sega. Don't remember if it was Saturn or Genesis. Probably the only purchase who'll try to give a reason why the movie was good.

        3. The Witcher: This is a new addition, the Witcher series has really been growing on me more and more, and I really wish I caught onto it sooner.

        4. Battlefield: Been playing it since the very first title, even though I'm disappointed in BF3, and think BF4 is an abomination, the franchise is still among my favorites.

        5. Dragon Age: This one probably would never be near anyones top list. But for me I love this series. Origins was great and the type of game you'd expect from the creators of Baldurs Gate, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect. DA2 kinda fell flat and was as mediocre as mediocre can get. I'm very hopefully for number 3.

        6. Spawn: Back on the Dreamcast this was the only game I cared to play nonstop. It was so fun and maybe not even a great game, but I loved it and Spawn is one of my favorite comic book characters.

        7. Gears of War: A game you either hate or love, I enjoyed this game way more than I thought I would have. It would probably be at least 6 or 5, but the multiplayer of Gears 3 and the existence of Gears Judgment knocks it down.

        8. Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Though it has a lot of issues, and the story lacks dept. I still really enjoyed this game and put so much time into it, spanning 3-4, maybe even 5 characters.(only 2-3 of those characters I went over 130hrs with).

        9. EA's NHL games: My favorite sport games, IMO there is no sport game more authentic than EA's NHL series.

        10. Assassin's Creed: Number 10 was pretty hard to come up with, it's pretty much up for grabs. But right now AC holds the sport. Black Flag is the only one I haven't played, and I do plan on getting Unity.

          1. Final Fantasy 7 (I have beaten this game once a year since it came out in '97...its an addiction)
          2. Portal (real surprised no one else had this...)
          3. Counter Strike: Source (I had to list it as I used to play all competitive like)
          4. Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (Great franchise, this is the best of them)
          5. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (I just recently picked this game back up still as amazing as I remember)
          6. Super Smash Bros. Melee (Reminds me of college even though i was the worst of my friends)
          7. Mario Kart 64 (Ahh my youth still fun to play to this day with "The boys")
          8. Gran Turismo 3 (So many hours spent, trying to get the Indy car I couldn't leave it off plus it was a phenomenal game)
          9. Golden Eye (The game that revolutionized FPS's and invented "Screen looking")
          10. Brigandine (This is a rare game my buddy bought at a pawn shop for 10 bucks, and we played the crap out of it. Great Turn-based strategy game that consumed one of our summers.)

To be honest a top 10 is next to impossible for me haha. There are about 10 more games i wanted to list in the bottom 5 but the ones that are there won out due to how much fun i had playing them with buddies either recently or as a youth. That being said here is my honorable mention list : Metal Gear Solid, Super Mario World, Pokemon (of all colors just not yellow), Final Fantasy Tactics, Diablo II, Megaman 2, Assassins Creed 2, Uncharted (any of them), Final Fantasy X, Borderlands 2, Street Fighter II Turbo
Last edited by 86Elwayfan; 05-05-2014, 03:27 PM. Reason: Replaced Street Fighter II Turbo (Now in Honorable mentions) with Brigandine

Goldeneye is definitely one of the ones I should've listed before Madden and a couple of the other sports ones.

Like 86 Elway said it revolutionized the genre.

And we played it nonstop for years when 64 was the best console available.

Everything outside of my top 2-3 could probably change, but this is my list for the foreseeable future. I'll be specific and won't list the entire series of a game for variety.

              1. Mass Effect 1
              - Good sense of adventure, story, and an immersive sci-fi world. Best in the series. It's a shame BioWare completely turned into a train wreck now.
              2. Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage
              - One of the first PS1 games I remember playing. Great platformer and certainly one of the most memorable.
              3. Knights of the Old Republic I
              - Probably the best Star Wars game. A completely new take on Star Wars with a great story to go along with it.
              4. Assassin's Creed II
              - I've been very critical of the AC series as a whole, but not because of AC2. This game was a huge step up from AC1 and introduced a very memorable character in Ezio with a tragic start.
              5. Fallout: New Vegas
              - When this game decides to work, it's an amazing experience. The good outweighs the bugs and crashes. Good game for role-playing and with interesting companions, and consequences.
              6. Batman: Arkham City
              - The best Batman game to date. I was disappointed in Asylum due to its linearity but AC opened it up, had a great story, and a great ending. It also marks the end of Mark Hamill as the Joker.
              7. Road Rash III
              - The greatest racing series ever. I don't know if RR3 is my favorite, but it's the one I've played the most. I wish EA would make more of them or sell the rights to another developer.
              8. The Revenge of Shinobi
              - Amazing soundtrack on the Genesis and 2D Action at its best. The last boss is impossible, however...
              9. Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
              - An incredibly underrated game. It has amazing replay value. You can play it using only a lightsaber and force powers, or as a FPS.
              10. Crysis 1
              - Many people only remember the first Crysis due to the graphics and benchmarks, but to me it's still an amazing game all-around with some revolutionary ideas. The open levels, cloaking, and real time weapon modding all started with Crysis.

                1. Super Mario World
-My personal favorite 2d game of all time, also my favorite game. nothing can beat it its the first game I own at five the first one and the first i completed 100% on my own. Nintendo put a good nugget on its launch game on the snes the best 16 bit console.

                2.TESTV Skyrim
-best 3d game I ever played, I can spend years playing it and never get bored. Rebuilding different class is fun and never a chore.

                3. World of Warcraft.
                - It lost its luster, but this game was my first online game that really felt like a community. Its also the first game i had to learn how to work as a team member.

                4.Kingdom Hearts
                - The must have of any of the ps2 games you have to own. Squarenix made another weird hybrid and it was awesome.

                5. Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
                - Sega best game ever, three different characters with their own powerups great game in its own right.

                6. Final Fantasy 8
                - While not as loved as its predecessor. This game had the best story of any of the final fantasy games as well its 2 mini games taking care of a chocobo and a great card game mini game that gave great rewards. IF only the battle system wasn't so difficult and bloated.

                7. Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow.

Charmender will always be my best friend. The love you feel from the gameboy little critters as you collect them gave memoirs to last a lifetime.

                8. Bioshock Infinte

Never had a game make me revisited it for its story multiple times. Easy as heck but its story was one of the best ever.

                9. Gears of War 3.

Best two player game ever. No matter who was my partner its was the definte xbox360 series for me.

                10. Infamous Second Son.

I love the infamous series as much Cole was a great character. I like the Dustin was a more fun character, the mutiple superpowers was a great touch.

I think that's one of the great things about Games....or really any sort of creative medium, be it games, music, movies, shows etc. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes and no opinion is wrong. Reading through others lists has made me want to go back and play a bunch of games I haven't in forever.

Not me mainly because they won't live up to my memory lol. And I just don't see them withstanding the test of time as technology has advanced so much. I rather just keep them as fond memories. And I probably couldn't locate most of them anymore anyways

Haha fair enough. I will say I actually went onto uncle eBay and rebought an N64 with all my favorite games just so I could replay them. They have all been just as awesome as i remember.

Along with those listed, I would add Double Dribble, Mike Tyson Punch Out, Wrestlemania 64, Atari Pac Man, Zaxon, Donkey Kong Jr. (Coleco Vision), NBA Jam, Return Of The Jedi (Super Nintendo), Tecmo Bowl (W/Bo Jackson)

Reading some peoples responses I really regret rushing my list yesterday. I just wanted to get the thread started and see people's responses.

I like your list mostly accept I never got into the star Wars games.

Tecmo Bowl I don't know what I was thinking leaving you off the list in favor of Madden. Stupidity on my part.

Double dribble was good but there was an NCAA basketball game (can't remember the name but it may have just been NCAA basketball) that was great graphics and quality for the time era. Better than Double dribble in my opinion. Me and my brothers were obsessed with it.

                            I also love NHL 94 and 95 a lot.

I think Diddey Kong racing was extremely underrated and close to on part with Mario Kart. Although I don't think I ever beat the hardest settings.

Problem with my list is in my childhood I rarely ever actually beat games. I just played a ton a lot. I'm probably more of a casual gamer against my pride so my list wouldn't suit the typical hard core fan.

If I did a second stab I think it would go

                            1. Mario Kart Series
                            2. Mario 1, 3 and Super Mario World
                            3. Diddey Kong Racing
                            4. Donkey Kong (Whatever versions were on Super Nintendo
                            5. Tecmo Bowl/Super Bowl both
                            6. RBI Baseball
                            7. That olympic game with the gamepad that you do the foot movements on. I forgot about this game yesterday but it was a classic at my house.
                            8. NCAA Football Series
                            9. Skyrim
                            10. Goldeneye
