I'm a huge Star Wars fan.... but I cringed when I saw Leia "super-manning" it through space.
From then on, the movie just was sorta 'meh' to me. Didn't like the ending either...

Currently the worst "audience" rated Star Wars film ever. It looks like it may continue to trend even lower. Wow!
People give me grief for being a "fanboy" and "loving the originals too much" that nothing would have appeased me, but I disagree. I appreciate the originality of Rogue One, found it entertaining, and even though it missed the mark... I'd still give it a C+/B-.
With the incredibly rich universe and insane amounts of canon, there was ZERO excuse not to continue this new trilogy in a totally unique and creative way, rather than re-hashing the old story and throwing some CGI lipstick on it. Why is it that the Disney studios and any director that takes on this franchise struggles? Even the stand-alone films have been plagued with writing/directing issues ( a la the new "Solo" movie). It's really a shame, with how rich this universe is, that these films continue to "whiff."
This is has become a very controversial and divisive film amongst the fanbase. But there are actually many old school people who like it or love it, like a good friend of mine who is more accepting of some of the decisions and twists in the film.
Art is a matter of taste, and movies as the cinematic arts is no exception to that. Some parts of this movie may appeal to one's particular personal tastes that contribute to the overall assessment and may tip the balance. I mean for one guy, a certain scene with a certain surprise character, weighed heavily in favor!
My advice is to forget what you've read about it and go see the film with an open mind. There is much to be said for engaging the sheer spectacle of it on a large screen with a deluxe surround system, and all the films recall somewhat of the glory of the first one: the opening signature logo, main theme march, and opening crawl, and it is yet another imaginative foray into that galaxy far far away (where we'd all rather live -haha).. John William's score is fantastic as usual --really perfect for the latest chapter of the 'space opera'.
I was entertained, and I think it was worth the price of admission, even if it didn't meet some of my personal expectations and the standards set by the original trilogy, which (it must be conceded) sets a rather high bar and is a very tough act to follow!

The Porgs weren't added to TLJ because they wanted a cute cuddly creature for merchandise (ok, not ONLY for that reason).... The island where they did the filming (name escapes me) is covered in puffins. It's easier to cover them up than remove them entirely.

It can go the other way too, I saw some positive duplicates, reminding me of the shilling that happens at Amazon.com for new products.

Do you know what theme I'm talking about? It's been in a lot of the third-party TLJ related commercials... it's like a slower version of the Imperial Theme. Instead of 'Bum bum bum... bumBUMbum.. bumBUMbum...' It's more 'Bum... Bum... Bum.. Bumbumbumbum...'
I have to see if I can find an example.
Edit: Easy answer.... 28 seconds into the trailer https://youtu.be/Q0CbN8sfihY?t=27s
Further Edit: Track 17 'The Spark' Has the theme briefly starting around the 2:30 mark.

The biggest complaint that just has me shaking my head is the people that are like "MARY SUE!!! MARY SUE!!!" People just cannot accept that Rey picked up on the force and lightsabers without years of training. I've heard it called "lazy writing"
I've tried to point out Luke's experience consisted of one lesson with Obi-wan, a week or two at best with Yoda and then nothing, and then he goes and takes on Vader his father who HAS had years of training and holds his own, eventually defeating him.
So it's fine and believable for Luke, but if Rey does it, she's an over powered mary sue. I'm yet to get an angry fan boy explanation of how Luke's situation was any different from Rey's.
They Mary Sue complaints have *some* merit, I feel... but it's really hard to say at the end of TFA, because of the question marks regarding her backstory. After TLJ, it's hard to say, and I don't want to go into it because it's too early still to get spoilery.
It doesn't bother me that much.
Something that does bother me is inconsistency in travel times, power level of ships, etc. I think that makes it hard to really get a handle on how much training Luke really had both with Obiwan and Yoda, though he also did some training between V and VI... The time frames for TLJ seem a bit messed up, IMO... but what really got me a little worked up was making it seem like a massive dreadnought that would be a target of opportunity/note only had maybe a dozen guns (even if just on the top).
I almost want to start a spoiler heavy thread just to keep this one lighter in the meantime.
