So Do You Keep Your Service(s) When There Are No New Shows?

So when the lockdown of Movies and TV hits us, with the end result of few if any new shows for a long while, what do you do with services you pay for that become diluted with older stuff?

I will keep our regular TV programming to a high degree, but will look to get rid of movie type channels. Probably Netflix. There are times when I think about getting rid of some packages, and this when we had active programming.

Then again, if we are lucky and this pandemic gets mostly resolved sooner than later, I might wait on some. But in general, we will be talking delays of about a half year or more, if all goes well.

I try to keep my mind off that Fear Can. But I have feared it some.

Right now we have Disney+ for four years. Mainly good for kids. We have Netflix. We’ve already had some days of digging the bottomed the barrel. But they still have some new original content coming so I’m not ready to cancel yet. We are halfway though season one of White Lines which is good. And Steve Carrell has a new show coming next week about space force. But the good movies are slowing down.

I also haven’t canceled directv yet out of hopes the Broncos season will occur. The second the nfl cans 2020 directv will be the first thing i cut.

Also currently have a one month free trial of Starz but not much on there of interest. Just want to watch BrightBurn.

I think what I’ll do at some point is maybe can Netflix for a couple of months and try Hulu or amazon prime. I know most people pay a full year for prime but right now there is no expedited shipping anyway. So if I wanted tv content it would probably be a month to month until we get bored of that. But hopefully people could try circling around networks for a while to stay entertained. We still haven’t seen the most recent seasons of shameless, homeland or westworld. So it’ll be a while before we run out of content. Just a better strategy to not pay for all of those services at once.

Once some things run dry yes I will likely cancel. I’ve always liked how easy it is to start and stop On Netflix whenever you want. But I haven’t considered it in some time also due to kids.

What about you?

I was thinking of cancelling cable long before the pandemic hit. For the last two years, the only channel I watch regularly is National Geographic Wild, 95% of the time. Other than that, I watch the the YES Network for the Yankees and Nets games, the NFL Network from April - February and occasionally the MSG Network for the Knicks games. I really don't watch much "traditional" TV anymore. Now all I watch are Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and podcasts on YouTube. All together that's at least $100 less than what I pay for cable. If I can figure out how to get my local teams' network and all the Raiders games, I'll be fine with getting rid of my cable service.

I don't believe it will be a "long while" or that big of a gap, honestly, and there were some things in production which will still be released. Agents of SHIELD starts up again on Wednesday, for example.

I ditched cable a while ago and bought an antenna for $25 and I can get all the major networks, PBS (which I watch all the time) and in HD without paying anything more for them! Plus there's a few other channels which are decent -- MeTV, CW, etc.

Then I got an Amazon firestick and through that I have Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Disney and I installed a few free apps (like IMDB) which offer free content. I have enough existing movies and shows to last a very long time -more time than I have really- plus there's many things I want to watch again. I'm not worried.

I am keeping my ... antenna. I got rid of any cable years ago. I did have Youtube.TV for awhile and then they upped the price so I cancelled.
I do have Netflix which I was considering cancelling too, a couple months ago. I just don't watch enough of it. I do really like Ozark but I am caught up on that now so I might cancel for awhile.

It will be interesting to see how HBOMAX will fair since it looks like it doesn't support Roku or Amazon fire sticks at launch.

But I've cut the cord a long time ago and have gone pure steaming. It's kind of crazy looking through all the subscriptions I have from my hobbies. But cable prices where getting out of hand and usually channels I wanted would be in the higher bracket. Rather do steaming services where I can pick and choose the ones I want.

This would be a good time to make movies sort of like "I Am Legend", "Cast Away", "The Shallows", "Buried", (ha ha...the last two basically involve a real life couple - Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively), and anything with one primary actor.

I cancelled Dish years ago, and sling recently as well.
Now we only pay for Amazon Prime $12 & A $10 package with Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+
