  • The Darkest Song Thread

Alright, been on a bit of a CP drought lately and decided to try something out. I know there have been threads about people's favorite songs and other categories like that, but as I sit here listening to my mp3 collection, I had an idea strike me...or maybe it was a paper airplane.

Anyways, what are some of your favorite songs to listen to that have a dark feeling to them? The kind of songs you listen to when you're in a crappy mood and feelin' kinda depressed? As is the responsibility of any thread starter, I will begin the list.

System of a Down - Spiders
    Disturbed - Darkness (strange, huh)
    Godsmack - Voodoo
    Metallica - Enter Sandman
    Metallica - Fixxxer
    Slipknot - Wait and Bleed
    Stone Sour - Bother
    Tool - Sober
Full Devil Jacket - Where Did You Go
    Eminem - Stan
Eminem - Cleaning Out My Closet
Eminem - The Way I Am

Elliot Smith - Needle In The Hay
    Radiohead - Creep
Nirvana Unplugged (most of the cd in my opinion)

Most of the Linkin Park songs. One Step Closer, Crawling, In the End, and much more. I'm a fan of Hybrid Theory more than of Meteora.

PS This is in the wrong place.

Well, when I am down, I listen to happy stuff to try and cheer me up.

That being said, if you mean what do I think are violent/sad/creepy tunes, I have compiled a list off of the top of my head:

Every Breath You Take - The Police (listen to the lyrics, stalker central)

I Want You - Elvis Costello (the weird, freaked out guitar solo sounds like he is obsessed to the point of murder)

Mirror, Mirror - Def Leppard (dark, minor key riff, lyrics about self loathing. This is early Def Lep, when they weren't as pop oriented)

Forget Me Not - Bad English ("forget me not, cause you belong to me..." obsess much? One of their few dark tunes).

Possession - Sarah McLachlan (stalker lyrics)

Unholy - KISS (written from the viewpoint of Satan)

Sympathy for the Devil (written from the viewpoint of Satan)

Closer - NIN (come on, you all know this song is misogynistic, even if it is brilliant)

Hurt - NIN/Johnny Cash (self loathing, suicide)

Night Prowler - AC/DC (although you can't take anything this band says in a literal sense, the lyrics do read as if they are from the viewpoint of a sexist misogynist at best, a serial rapist at worst)

Figured You Out - Nickelback (I actually thought they were ok, until I heard this song....WTF? Dude has some issues)

Stranglehold - Ted Nugent (weird, plodding bass line, lyrics that espouse violence toward women)

Call of Ktulu - Metallica (instrumental. Just creepy)

Suite Sister Mary - Queensryche (strange latin choral music in the middle, a man sent to murder a nun has sex with her instead. I love QR, but its a dark song from a dark album)

Everybody's gotta elevate from the norm...

The greatest list of music I don't own on CD

            That's not true.

This forum is 3rd only to GD and ABF in its hits.

            You'll be fine.

Damn, I forgot about Kix. That was a sad tune.

                  And Faster *****cat too.

Sucicide and abuse are always downers in music.

That reminds me, Suzanne Vega's "Luka" is sad, although not very dark or creepy sounding.

Spiders is one of my all time favorite songs.

Most Depressing song though you say?

                    How about:

                    Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen

                    Is this the real life?
                    Is this just fantasy?
                    Caught in a landslide
                    No escape from reality
                    Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
                    A little high, little low
Anyway the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me, to me

                    Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
                    Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away
                    Mama, ooo
Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters

Too late, my time has come
                    Sends shivers down my spine
                    Body's aching all the time
Goodbye everybody - I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama, ooo - (anyway the wind blows)
                    I don't want to die
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all

I see a little silhouetto of a man
Scaramouch, scaramouch will you do the fandango
Thunderbolt and lightning - very very frightening me
                    Gallileo, Gallileo,
                    Gallileo, Gallileo,
                    Gallileo Figaro - magnifico

But I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves me
He's just a poor boy from a poor family
Spare him his life from this monstrosity
Easy come easy go - will you let me go
Bismillah! No - we will not let you go - let him go
Bismillah! We will not let you go - let him go
Bismillah! We will not let you go - let me go
Will not let you go - let me go (never)
Never let you go - let me go
Never let me go - ooo
No, no, no, no, no, no, no -
Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me
                    for me
                    for me

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye
So you think you can love me and leave me to die
Oh baby - can't do this to me baby
Just gotta get out - just gotta get right outta here

                    Ooh yeah, ooh yeah
                    Nothing really matters
                    Anyone can see
Nothing really matters - nothing really matters to me

                    Anyway the wind blows...
The Browns are gone; I'm not a fan of the Impostors

The real Browns are in Baltimore, see?

Not necessarily most depressing, just a dark-mooded song, almost sinister sounding. All good songs though, keep 'em coming.
