I am a historian and European and Middle Eastern History are my specialties.
Recently I saw the film, Kingdom of Heaven. A Ridley Scott film and from my professional opinion I feel the following -
The Film does not go along Hollywood's norm. This film is very accurate as to the early Latin Kingdoms of Israel. The Kingdom of Heaven spoken of in the film is a land where Muslims, Jews, and Christians live in peace.
This film, despite having been objected to by the Religous right and such of America, is very good and accurate. Yes, some events in the film did not happen. However the film portrays the Crusades from both points of view and in doing so presents a problem to groups that only see it one way. History is a subject that always changes with each passing generation. In the past, Christian society only learned of these events from their own. Which, of course is biased. Just as the Muslims themselves have had biased scholars. This film does a good job of telling a story, which is what History really is. Telling the story of mankind. The Crusades were a dark event in history. However the clash of both cultures helped advance Science and Mathematics and many other things. I will leave you with a quote from the film that went something like this:
" The Kingdom of Heaven is a dream, a dream that lives on in all our hearts and our minds "
