Poison- Great guitar riffs, cheese lyrics...guys dressed in drag...quaint...

Motley Crue- Probably cornered the market on drug abuse...never did like Vince Neil's voice...

Whitesnake- Never understood what exacly it is that women saw in David Coverdale...Tawny Kataen was the only reason I watched their vids...

Bon Jovi- I know at least 1 fan here... ....I kinda like Bon Jovi...I bought "Slippery when wet" when I was in 6th grade...good record all in all...

Warrant- Holy poser-band! "She's my cherry pie, cool drink of water what a sweet surprise, looks so good, bring a tear to your eye, sweet cherry pie"

Def Leppard- The consumate "Chick-band"...women loved Def Leppard and that may be the only reason that I knew who they were...

The Scorpions- A European band, I think...Had a couple of good tunes here and there..."Rock you like a Hurricane" and "Winds of change"...not bad...

Skid Row- Probably my second favorite...I hated Sebastian Bach, but they made good musc IMO...

Guns 'n Roses- As much as I hated Axl Rose for beating up his supermodel wife (Stephanie Seymour) over and over again, they made the best music of them all...and other than the drug abuse, what's not to like about Slash?

Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, and Def Leapord ALL deserve the highest praise, but GnR brought music to a whole new level, prbly the greatest band of the late 80's-early 90's

I'm gonna get into semantics here, just for fun, and say that GNR probably don;t qualify as a hair metal band. Yes, they had long hair, but instead of the over the top, tongue in cheek mix of Zep, KISS, and Van Halen that the rest of the Sunset Strip bands played, they were definitely all about Aerosmith, the Stones, and oddly enough, Queen. With an agressive gutter rat mentality thrown in.

Now, of the bands listed, they were by far the most dangerous and truly a 'rock n roll' band.


But in terms of hair metal, of the ones listed, Def Leppard was the best hair pop metal band ever. I like Bon Jovi and the rest, but they nailed the mix just right, and man, could those guys play. Listed to the first 3 albums to hear the talent. And they were so young when they made it too.


But three bands that I think can be included here are Ratt, Dokken, and Cinderella. Lesser radio hits, but sold just as many records as everyone here except for DL and BJ.

Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Guns 'n Roses, Cinderella, KISS, Ozzy !......... ok I'll stop now. I like all of the above(including the ones in the poll).

The best is LA Guns - I don't like to label them a hair band; I'd call them sleaze rock straight from the Strip. Tracii Guns is a fantastic guitar player. Check him out currently in Brides of Destruction. Phil Lewis can't be beat as a front man. He sounds just a great on a ballad as he does screaming a rocker! Great, Great Band. Check them out even though Tracii's not in the current lineup.

Other fav's are Love/Hate - Jizzy Pearl has killer vox. He's currently the lead singer for Ratt and you can see them this summer touring with Cinderella (Tom Kiefer has a great bluesy voice).

Faster Pu$$ycat - Taime Down is one cool cat. Dark, funny, sleazy tunes.

Poison is one of the best live shows I've ever seen...unbelieveable energy.

Warrant is fantastic with Jani Lane but pale with the current singer Jamie St. James from Black-n-Blue.

Skid Row- Same story as Warrant although their new singer is pretty good, but no one can touch Bach...great pipes.

W.A.S.P - Early records were great...I hope to see them this summer.

Other bands I like that put on a great live show....Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Great White, and Firehouse

Amazingly all the bands I listed (except Love/Hate)are still touring...everyone says Grunge killed 80's metal, but there seem to be more 80's bands touring than grunge bands..thank GOD!

I think GNR is one of the most overrated bands ever. They have a few great songs (Paradise City, Don't Cry, November Rain), but I think their albums have a bunch of really bad songs too. The Use Your Illusion albums are a perfect example. There are maybe 5 songs between the 2 albums that I ever thought very much of.

As far as hair bands, I never cared for many of them beyond the occassional hit they may have had and that was only fleeting.

I appreciated Maiden and Queensryche a lot more during those days as well as stuff like Depeche Mode and New Order.

Honorary "non hair" band: Tesla. They refused to adopt the look, and industry experts think this fact cost them a certain amount of notoriety. Great sound/talent.

I went with Motley Crue...they rocked..I saw them in concert with the Scorpions!

Ratt and Crue are my favorite hair bands. Guns put out the best record though. Appetite is one of the greatest records from start to finish IMHO.

No, 1987-1990 was peak time. Def Leppard sold 10 mil, Bon Jovi sold 10 mil, GNR sold 10 mil, all in that frame.


It was because it was soooooo saturated that 'alternative' came to the forefront in 1991. People got sick of all these 'hair' bands.

The problem with Cinderella was that their first producer, as well as A&R man, and Jon Bon Jovi himself, said they should accentuate the more metallic aspects of their sound on that first album. It was a hit record, but the second and third ones showed their true sound, which had more to do with Aerosmith, The Stones, and the Doors, than Van Halen, KISS, and Bon Jovi.

I mean, they had horns, pianos, dobros, slide guitars, and female gospel back up singers. Definitely not really a metal band......although, they did have that glam/big hair look, sadly.


And you are right about Tesla. They were never a hair metal band to start, and now that they have gotten back together, they are able to still play to audiences, because they never had a gimmicky look or sound. Just blues based, 70's style rock, played by guys who look like they would be at your local corner bar. Very much more like Bad Company, Peter Frampton, and Zeppelin than the Van Halen and Motely Crue clones theygot lumped in with. Rather than focus on big, radio and arena ready hoosk and videos, they focused on writing and solid musicianship. Indeed, in retrospect, their guitar players have a lot more respect than most of their peers. "Modern Day Cowboy" has that weird lopsided riff. Very technical stuff. "Changes" has lyrical depth that their peers couldn't or wouldn't touch, because they were all kinda macho. And that intro to "Love Song".....man, thsoe guys could write, arrange, and play.


If you like classic blues based rock (Skynyrd, Steve Miller, Zeppelin, Bad Company) Tesla is a band you will enjoy. Too bad those prodcution values are pure 80's pop metal...big reverbed drums, layered guitars. Cold, distant bass, vocals too up front.

I liked Quiet Riot a lot, but in the end, it has to be Def Leppard. They were just incredible songwriters and true masters of their instruments.
