Because The Night - Patti Smith

Thanks, Den21-Bal19 - I had been under the false impression that Natalie Merchant's version was the original.

...Always a class act - in any uniform.

sbutk: i can see why Denver is taking TO's right now [trailing by 7, with 30 seconds left in the half]. but why Oakland???

Captain Lori: You are trying to figure out the Raiders. Try figuring out women instead; it's probably much easier.

I'm pretty sure it's actually a Bruce Springsteen song, there's a great live version on the 75-85 Live CD.

                - Elton John

"Because the Night" was performed and made famous by Smith, but written by Springsteen. I think Smith put it on her album first. Maybe he gave it to her, and then performed it live after it was a hit?

It first appeared on Smith's very fine "Easter" album in 1978. It has never appeared on a Springsteen studio album, that I know of.

Yeah, that sounds about right. The album sleeve for the Live CD gives it as a joint Patti Smith - Bruce Springsteen credit, with the live recording being from 1980.

OK, thanks. If there's one thing I'm learning from this little game, it's that a lot of song versions I know are turning out to be re-recordings.
