It's too bad he didn't continue developing on his own rather than doing the Zappa Plays Zappa thing instead. Oh well, I'm sure lot's of people like seeing him carry on Franks' music but I'd be happier if he was doing new things instead...
He did produce his own stuff:
1986 – Havin' a Bad Day
1988 – My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama
1991 – Confessions
2000 – Automatic
2006 – Go with What You Know
2015 – Via Zammata'
...and a couple a records with brother Ahmet.
But nobody really knows about it because they aren't "great". That song I linked to is merely "okay"and only got playtime on MTV because Dweezil was a VJ for them back then. Of course he was only 17 then (sister Moon is 19 in the video)...
While he has the technical skill and talent with the guitar, I don't think he has dad's (nor teacher Eddie VH's) musical chops so speak to produce great material that will sell. Big shoes to fill, tough acts to follow, so maybe it was easier to simply play his dad's stuff? And/or he's just too scattered having been part of so many other projects?
