I had to have my Miami Vice every Friday night.
And I liked lots of other as well.
    What are/were you favorites?

        So Many....

... But my favorite, and I believe the very best --

        Homicide: Life on the Street

About the Baltimore police -- very, very realistic, and, probably key for me,
with characters I could really understand and care about.

The Shield & 24 are two of the three best shows around at the moment, IMO. (The third being Battlestar Galactica).

I grew up watching Miami Vice, Starsky & Hutch and Kojak, all brilliant. Especially Miami Vice, I was surprised at how good it still looks when I treated myself to the DVD set, and the soundtrack is still superb.

One British show that's not on the list is The Bill. It used to be superb, I think it's being running for the best part of 20 years now. The original format was of self-contained 25 minute stories, but nowadays it's an hour lng and more like a soap ..................plus they got rid of the better characters.

Police Squad never fails to raise a chuckle, but I'd guess my all time favourite isn't on the list..........

                      SLEDGE HAMMER!

For those that didn't see it, it ran for two years in the mid-80's starring David Rasche as Inspector Sledge Hammer, an unashamed lampooning of Clint's Harry Callaghan. The show just played on all the cop show stereotypes, Rasche's mega violent, male chauvinist pig inspector, Anne-Marie Martin as his long suffering, highly intelligent female partner (think Tyne Daly in The Enforcer) and Harrison Page as his constantly shouting, migraine suffering black captain (Starsky & Hutch's Captain Dobie). Add to that an irreverent sending up of every cop movie of the era, Dirty Harry, RoboCop, Witness and a few classics like The Colour Of Money & To Sir, With Love and chaos ensues............one unforgettable visual gag was the city morgue with a bunch of dead Elvis Impersonators, 6 or 7 of the in a line, covered with sheets, and all you can see is the quiffs Absolutely brilliant

Twin Peaks was listed as a cop show? That show was bizarre to say the least and did follow it. But......

NYPD Blue was my all time favorite.
