Looking to buy a TV, some ?'s

Ive noticed there are a few members on here with extensive home theater knowledge so I was wondering if I could pick your brains.

Right now I'm in the market for a new HDTV. Budget is < $1700

My TV will primarily be used for Xbox and DVD's.

So my questions are:

DLP, LCD, Plasma? Pros/Cons, opinions?

Are Projectors worth it?

Brands?

Also TV specs and stuff, 1080p/i etc, all the stuff on the inside.

For the price range, you either want a projection or LCD t.v. Unless you plan on doing HDDVD or Blu-Ray, you can stick with 720p and all your games and DVDs will look great. This will also keep the price point down. If you want a big t.v., go with projection. They are usaully cheap compated to other technology (plasma, etc) t.v.'s that are the same size. Personally, I use my t.v. for xbox and dvd like you do and I just have a 32" LCD Sharp that I bought for $900.

Ive been looking at some DLP TV's. DLP seems to be cheaper than the LCD or Plasma with the same specs? Any idea why?

No clue. I usaully see DLP's for a much higher cost. I'd have to look into it.

i thought dlp was really expensive.. isn't that new technology?

dlp will have a deeper screen and take up more space. not sure how much heavier it will be. lcds are thin and very light. i just bought a 32" westinghouse and i love it, but my room is pretty small, so it is plenty big.

i think the first thing you have to decide is what size of tv you are going to need, and work from there. if you are sitting far away from the screen, i would rather have a 42" at 1080i than a 30" at 1080p. but regarding that, i have read a lot of people say you don't need 1080p until you are talking about tv's 40" or bigger, as the difference isn't really detectable on smaller screens.

your price range is high enough that i would think about getting a samsung. i have heard from a lot of places that samsung offers the best picture for the money. whatever you get, make sure it has a fast refresh rate 8ms or less, because if not you can get ghosting when playing video games.

like i said, i have a westinghouse and i love it. i bought it on black friday, camped out and got it for 480.. it was a 950 dollar tv, so i got a killer deal... my budget was a lot lower than yours

EDIT: wow DLPs are cheap.. best buy has a 61" DLP by samsung for just over 1500... i don't know much about those though, so sorry..

I was thinking DLP was more expensive too, but I still say go with LCD like you and I have. I can not honestly tell the difference between 720p and 1080 but that may just be me. The only time I do notice is when I use my HDDVD player.
