I voted for Freebird because I'm a huge Skynyrd fan, being from Georgia and all. But I think my favorite rock song is probably either Hells Bells by AC/DC or The Unforgiven by Metallica.

    great song.
La La is an Ashlee Simpson song. Layla is an Eric Clapton song. But it's not even the best one on that album.

My vote for best rock song goes to Revolution by the Beatles or Satisfaction by the Stones.

I agree with tprice in the impossible-to-select department.

Both "Stairway" and "Freebird" are great (and enduring) selections, however...

First, we would have to define "Rock." Is it hard rock, "rock and roll," "classic" rock, what? Rockabilly? Punk rock? Acid Rock? Metal?

(And what category would Jim Hendrix fit into?)

As for hard rock, I could come up with nothing better than Guns-N-Roses' "Sweet Child of Mine." (While, I've never been a fan of Axel Rose--The guy is, personally, a total creep.)

Classic rock: While the Sgt. Pepper LP set the rock world on edge in 1967, it might not be a candidate for "hard rock," or "metal." However, it was in a class of its own.

Metal: "Exit Light."* [*CORRECTION: the title is actually "Enter Sandman." Thank you, stnzed.] Very dark--not recommended for children, but excellent Metal.
[Footnote: I did not ban any music from my son at the time "Exit Light"* came out, but I gave him a full critique on how twisted it was. After he went to bed, however, I CRANKED IT!]

Oh, then there's "grunge": "Smells Like Teen Spirit" [See footnote above. However, by that time, son was about to enter college. So, we got to crank it, together. Very dark (and Satanic) imagery in the video, but we enjoyed it, mentally stripping out the imagery from the sheer entertainment value. Easily, the best grunge song of all time]

Punk rock: toss-up between Billy Idol's "White Wedding" and "Rebel Yell."

(Sorry to the Cars fans. They were more "techno")

Acid? Well, "Do You Want Somebody to Love?" is a candidate. (or, the other Jefferson Airplane hit of the day)

Rockabilly: "Tryin' to get to You." Early Elvis [Classic early-50's jukebox rockabilly. A must-listen to anyone seeking out the roots of rock and roll. Of course, Elvis did not re-invent the wheel. But he did insert his own white-boy style into the earlier Black be-bop.]

And then there's Hendrix: Hard to pigeonhole him into a category, as he displayed elements of Hard Rock, Acid and Metal, all rolled into one. Indisputably, one of the top guitarists of all time, possibly the best. Favorite Jimi tune? Hard to tell. He did everything from Classic Blues, to Acid. I liked his rendition of Dylan's "Watchtower," and will say no more.

And then, speaking of Hendrix, there's Janis.......

    Color me clueless here,

    uncle buck

Wait—You want something that will really blow your mind? One of my favorite pop tunes of all time is “We’ve Only Just Begun,” Karen Carpenter.

    Neither.

There are way better Led Zepplin songs than Stairway.

    Same with Skynard.

Neither. Stairway to Heaven is the better one of the two but when I hear thats song I feel myself starting to nod off. Its too long and too slow.

Agreed. So many different prefrences, different genres, can't compare really.

Both are great songs, but I'm not sure I would label either of them the best ever.

For now, until I can think of a better one, I'll say Free Bird is the better of the 2.
