Lansdowne boy stabs brother over video game

A 13-year-old boy fatally stabbed his older brother with a steak knife because the older boy refused to turn over a video game controller, authorities said.

Jahmir Ricks was charged with first-degree murder in the killing of 16-year-old Antwan Ricks at their home outside Philadelphia. The older boy died of a single stab wound to the chest, police said, and a bent and bloody knife was recovered from the home.

"I just stabbed my brother," the boy allegedly told police when they arrived at the home shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday.

Police believe the argument started when Antwan Ricks would not turn over the game controller after losing a game to his younger brother. Police Chief Daniel Kortan said the rules of the house were that the person who lost the game had to turn over their controller for someone else to play.

"To the best of our knowledge, this started as a dispute over a video game," Kortan said.

The argument escalated into an all-out brawl and the younger boy grabbed the knife, Kortan said.

Antwan Ricks was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Jahmir Ricks, who was charged as an adult, was being held without bail at the Delaware County prison and it was not immediately known if he had obtained an attorney. He also faces charges of third-degree murder, assault, recklessly endangering another person and possession of instruments of crime.

wow i guess you can blame the video games in this one

    Wow, what a sad story.

I don't know that charging a 13 yr old as an adult is the answer. If they get him as an adult on 1st degree, he could be looking at life in jail.....as if living with the torment of killing his brother over a game isn't going to devastate him. If he was charged as a child he'd be looking at 8 years.

    How sad for everyone involved.

i agree its sad, and i don't know his mental state, but i can assume he knew what he was doing, thus i think charging him as an adult is just. do adult crime, do adult time

Its not the video game to blame...I would blame it on a short fuse of a
temper. Its sad to say the least...

I know, I know....but as a mother it breaks my heart to think of a 13 year old without the outlook this kid has. Then again, it breaks my heart that his brother will never have the chance at life.

Just an all around suck ass situation. :brick:

i cant just say throw him in a cell and lock the keys just yet

sure if he knew what he was doing and had intended to kill him its a diffent story but without know the full story i cant say yet.

id hate to see a 13 year old kid get throw in jail plus having to deal with mudering his own brother. i dont know if he intended to kill him or not i guess well just have to wait till the evidence unfolds.

its a sad sad story and unfortunate ending

At 13 he may have known he was STABBING his brother but without INTENT to kill they wont get first degree - As far as charging him as an adult - not so sure on this one - would need more facts, like does this kid have a history of being violent, etc...

But I agree with GEM -living with this fact is going to be a severe punishment if this was something that just got our of hand, so to speak

I know a family this happened to

Two of the brothers got into an argument (all of them are in their late 20's and 30's), over what I dont remember, but they have quite the history of being criminal and violent, well one of the brother shot the other and he died - The worst part was seeing the mom and the other brother (who was the mild one) go through having to bury one brother and the mother having to testify against her own son in the shooting since she was in the house when it happened, unfortunately she will never have to testify - she died of a heart attack (I say broken heart) about 1 1/2 mths after the incident

                This is just sick.

I don't even know what to say.

I don't even know what to think.

I don't know how this kid is going to be able to get on with his life after this but I don't think they should go very easy on him. I don't think him getting put in prison for life is right but he still commited a murder and he should still be punished severly. Untill we know more though we wont know what a fair punishment is.

Can blame video games for this one? Maybe as much as you can blame knives and terrible parenting.

What are you talking about. You can't blame video games because someone is stupid. More like blame bad parenting for this one.

Unless they we're playing a game where you stab opponents with a steak knife, I don't believe the kid got the idea from his games

                    wow.

now he has to live wiht that on his shoulders for the rest of his life.

he probably saw him looking at him after he was stabbed like, "man, i cant beleive you would do such a thing".

                    that would break my heart.

knowing that i flipped out over a video game and killed my brother.

                    incredibly sad.
white sox are done, broncos looking strong, lakers gonna win it all again.

                      story was mislabeled

                      it should read

"brother kills brother because he wouldn't share"

it could have been anything that the brother refused to hand over, the kid obviously has issues that go way past videogames.
