  • DirecTV to add 70+ HD channels by year end, large rollout in September

For those of you who do not know, DirecTV will begin a fairly massive HD rollout in a few weeks. They are expected to add 30-40 HD channels in September and to have a total of 100 or so national HD channels by year end.

Some of the channels coming soon are multiple HBO, Starz and Cinemax channels, USA, FX, TBS, Sci Fi and FSN Rockey Mountain to name a few.

Here is a projected list of channels and when they will be available. I am not sure about cable in the big cities, but out here in the boonies, cable isn't even close to these numbers. How quickly cable will catch up (some of these channels don't even exist in HD yet), I have no idea.

They have packages ranging from $30 to $99. The HD channels are a $10 add on to whatever package you have, although if you networks (local or distant), or pay for HBO or Showtime, you get those HD channels for free, but then the $10 gets you ESPN, TND, HDNET, Universal, Discovery, etc.

Nobody knows if they will be any pricing change when these new channels are rolled out in September.
