In 1941 Ted Williams hit .406 (the last man to do so) while Joe DiMaggio hit in 56 consecutive games.

One could call that the best season for hitting, and the worst season for pitching... Though that is pretty cool those two things happened the same year... I'm gonna go ahead and predict (not quite as wild as my last prediction) that the 56 game hit streak falls this year... I just don't know who will do it.

Same season, Same League and Same Divison. I do not see either record breaking anytime soon.

Both played for the "Padres". Thumper played for Pacific Coast League (Minor League) before coming to Boston.

i know ted and gwynn were pretty close

              williams really loved him

Ted Williams once said, “Tony Gwynn is the Picasso of modern-day hitters, nobody studies the game harder, pays more attention to detail and goes to the plate with a better idea of what he wants to do.”

That year Jolt'n Joe was the AL MVP, while The Kid won the Triple Crown. Personaly I think that Williams should have been the MVP that season. I do respect what DiMaggio did that season, I feel the hitting .406 and winning the Triple Crown is more valuable. The only reason I can see that voters gave the nod the the Yankee Clipper is that the Yankees won the American League Pennant, while Boston finished second. The Yankees record was 101 - 53 while Red Sox record was 84 - 70. The third place White Sox finished 77 - 77 so the argument can be made that Williams effort was more essential to his teams success.

I loved that moment between the two at the 1999 All Star Game.
