  • Boston Celtics great Larry Bird saw the Los Angeles Lakers as the enemy during his playing days, but there's one current Laker he'd like on his side if he were playing today -- Kobe Bryant.

Appearing on "The B.S. Report" with Grantland.com's Bill Simmons, Bird said that LeBron James is one of the greatest players and we should all sit back and enjoy what he can do on the basketball court. He even calls him the best player in the league, but he's not the player he would go into battle with.

If he could choose any current player that he'd like to play a season with, who would it be, Bird was asked.

"Well, probably Kobe, because of the fact that ... well, of course he wouldn't have been shooting as much as he does now ... but his desire to win, his dedication, to always get better, uh, and he's just, he's just tough," Bird said. "He's just a tough cat.

"But, if you want to have fun, like I did with Bill Walton, play with LeBron. It would have probably been more fun to play with LeBron, but if you want to win and win and win, it's Kobe. Not that LeBron's not a winner, just that [Kobe's] mindset is to go into every practice, every game, to get better."

Bryant has won five championships with the Lakers, one short of the legend he's most often compared to, Michael Jordan. James joined the Miami Heat last season and fell short in the NBA Finals, leaving him searching for his first title.

Bird, who is currently president of basketball operations for the Pacers, won three titles, two of them over the Lakers. He was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 1998.

    • I'd agree with that.

LeBron is the best, most talented player in the NBA without question, but come crunch-time, you take Kobe.

Come crunch time, as much as I despise him and have for a long time, I'd take Melo over Kobe.

However, I'd take Kobe over LBJ in a game more than likely.

But Melo is the most clutch player in the NBA. I hate to say that. But that doesn't make up for his countless other flaws.

        • That's because Melo is too stupid to understand/feel pressure lol

          • I think Melo is clutch but when has he been clutch in the post season when it really mattered. He has been out of the first round once in all of his career and despite the fact that he is probably the most clutch regular season player in the NBA I think in the playoffs it is some what unknown and after last year I would take Dirk over him in the clutch.

            • Jeremy Lin at it again for the Knicks. 20 points and 9 assists right now.

Where did this guy come from ?

See the Yahoo article about him? It appears he has his "own couch" at his brother's house where he's living.

                  • Well the Knicks are a better team without Melo. And this guy is leading them right now. A pretty good story for sure

                    • Jeremy Lin is a baller. He's finally getting a legit chance to start. He showed flashes when he was at Golden State, and I had high hopes when the Rockets got him, but wa stunned when he was cut.

I'm still mad that they let him go, and he's showing why. He could possibly be the next big international NBA star ala Dirk and Yao. What better place to make a name for yourself then in New York? He's already a fan favorite over there. Actually, the vibe seems to be that Knick fans are more excited about Lin than Melo.

                      • Jeremy Lin is exactly what we needed/hoped Baron Davis would be. We finally have a pure PG who is in the Rubio/Rondo mold. He has fantastic court vision and really sets the tone for the offense. I can not wait to see the pick n roll with him and Amare, with Melo as a kickout option. Diamond in the rough for sure.

                        • The bulls have been on a complete tear as of late. Blowing everyone out of the water. We are playing like the best in the league hopefully we continue to play at a high level. Rip Hamilton hasn't even been in the lineup but it doesn't seem like they need him.

Go Bulls!!!!!! P.S. Sucks about Chauncey man that hurts I've always respected him as a player hope he recovers well.

Reminds me of when people say I would rather have Dan Marino over John Elway for 4 qrts.

But I am down by 7 with 2 min. left and on the 10 yard line, I would rather have John Elway.

Perhaps Elway's career is eclipsed what he has in the final minutes of a game?

                              • My computer has been meh lately, couldn't post much, anyway.

Albeit's just 5 games, impressed with Lin. Watched that game last night, looks like he may be legit. Now how will Melo/Amare mesh with him?

Even if he's a flash in the pan, this is great for the NBA, great story.
