  • Apparantly the Red Sox have show interest in both Matt Holliday and Garrett Atkins and Buchholz is one of the players they are thinking about offering.

    Hmmm...
    ...capture it...remember it...

    • I'm mised on letting Buccholz go, if he is the pitcher we saw pitch a no-no then I'd hate to see him go, but if he is the one the struggled last season I would be ok with it.

I would hope a sign and trade is part of the deal, I would not want to have Holliday is a rent a player.

Now we have the news that the starting offer for Jason Varitek is four years for $52 million.

          Welcome to the silly season.

No matter that Varitek had too many times last year when he looked overmatched at the plate. No matter that he will be 37 next year, an age when most catchers go downhill.

No matter that, on the surface, anyway, it’s ridiculous that agent Scott Boras wants this many years for Varitek.

This is the climate, and if it doesn’t change, it seems we can say goodbye to Varitek, as the Red Sox have shown in the past — with Pedro and Johnny Damon — that they aren’t going to give aging players that many years.

wake is the same every year...he pitches great and he pitches poorly...but one thing is certain, he'll eat innings and be a good clubhouse presence

David Ortiz thinks the Red Sox need another 30-home run hitter and bullpen help in order to get them back to championship form next season.

Ortiz spoke to reporters was at the Absolut Club House at Fenway Park this morning promoting his new charitable golf tournament -- the David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic (Dec. 4-7) at the Punta Espada (Dominican Republic) Golf Club. Ortiz is quite passionate about the tournament, which will raise money for the David Ortiz Children's Fund to help children who need heart surgery in New England and the Dominican Republic. More than 40 children were helped by the charity last season.

Ortiz said he hopes to draw several celebrities to the tournament, including Yankee foes Alex Rodriguez and Mariano Rivera, as well as other high profile Dominican players like Miguel Cabrera, Vladimir Guerrero, and Alfonso Soriano.

"I'm trying to get Manny to come," quipped Ortiz.

Ortiz said about needing more pop in the Sox lineup, "I think so, especially in our division the pitching is improving a lot. And next year, let me tell you, you're going to have to face a lot of good pitching. The Yankees are going to be better, those guys in Tampa have good pitching and you never know what can happen."

He added, "I think we need a few guys in the bullpen and a 30-home run guy and we'll be all set."

Asked whether he thought of Mark Teixeira as a possibility he said, "I haven't really thought about it. We got Mikey [Lowell] and Youk [Kevin Youkilis]. Mikey has had surgery so you don't know what's gonna happen, hopefully he'll go back out there healthy. You definitely need to find another guy who can produce here."

Ortiz said he was surprised when he heard that Matt Holliday had been dealt from Colorado to Oakland.

"Yeah, I was surprised. Problem is that guys on the trade line they're always gonna go to the teams with the young players."

Will the Yankees spend a lot of money and regain their swagger?

"I don't know but I know something crazy is going to happen out there," Ortiz said. "I know they're going to do something because of the situation they are in right now. That's why we need to get stronger too."

Ortiz, who said he's waiting to hear back from Ramirez on whether he'll participate in the golf tournament, doesn't believe the former Sox slugger will end up in New York.

"I don't think so. I never heard Manny talking about that. I would think he'd stay in the National League," Ortiz said. "He did really good. He really liked it out there."

Asked whether he thought the Sox would have won the World Series with Manny, Ortiz smiled and said, "I don't know. Probably. Probably not."

                  Which one?

"I'll leave it up to you guys."

Ortiz said his wrist is feeling fine and rest should heal it all the way. Right now, no surgery is in the offing.

"I had inflammation at the end of the season. You stop swinging and take a month, rest and give it time," Ortiz said.

He said of the injury-filled season, "It's crazy man,. It's part of the game. It's something you can't control. The only thing I can control is what time I got to sleep. That's it. After that there aren't many things I'm gonna control." He admitted that he got into a lot of bad habits and swung at a lot of bad pitches, which he hopes a healthy wrist and outlook will solve next season.

                          Red Sox, Tigers talking trade involving Lugo;
Sox would get Willis or Robertson in return
The Globe's Nick Cafardo reported on Sunday that the Tigers are contemplating a trade with the Red Sox that would send either lefthanded starter Nate Robertson or Dontrelle Willis to Boston in exchange for Lugo, but that some money issues would have to be resolved. Lugo appeared in just 82 games in 2008 and was lost for the season when he suffered a severly torn left quadriceps on July 11. He posted a . 268 average with one home run and 22 RBIs. Lugo also struggled defensively, committing 16 errors in 292 total chances... The Sox do not appear to have any budgetary restraints on eating some of Lugo's contract if they have to. ... Theo Epstein said Lugo is 100 percent recovered from his quadriceps tear and likely will play winter ball in the Dominican. ... From the Globe's Tony Massarotti: Should the Red Sox find a taker for Lugo this offseason, they will find themselves in a familiar predicament: paying a shortstop to play for someone else. Lugo has two years and $18 million remaining on his contract, and in all likelihood, the Sox would have to eat at least half of his salary in any deal, which means they'd be paying him in the vicinity of $4.5 million this season to ply his trade elsewhere.
While Willis is no CC it will help close the gab.
