    • RED SOX 15, PIRATES 14 (10 innings)
      at Bradenton, Fla.
      Monday, March 9

Red Sox at the plate: Boston scored nine of its runs courtesy of the long ball, but it was Josh Red****'s RBI double in the 10th inning that proved to be the difference. Brad Wilkerson provided a big blast early, smacking a grand slam in the second inning. Designated hitter Josh Bard had a three-run homer in the first and finished with two hits and scored three runs. Infielder Nick Green and catcher Dusty Brown had solo shots. Outfielder Jeff Bailey also finished with a multi-hit game and two runs scored.

Red Sox on the mound: After two scoreless appearances earlier this spring, starter Jon Lester allowed one earned run on four hits in 2 1/3 innings in Monday's start. He struck out two. Hideki Okajima pitched one scoreless inning of relief, while reliever Takashi Saito allowed one run on one hit and two walks in one inning.

Grapefruit League records: Red Sox 5-6, Pirates 8-4

      Up next:
The Red Sox will host the Orioles on Tuesday afternoon at 1:05, and the contest will mark the return of Mike Lowell. After undergoing offseason surgery to repair an injured right hip, Lowell will serve as the club's designated hitter.

outstanding....could be an absolute steal if he continues to pitch like he did last season
Not sure if you saw this:

MONDAY, 2:07pm: WEEI's Alex Speier spoke to Lester, who said there is currently no contract extension agreement with the Red Sox.

That doesn't mean an extension won't be in place soon.

          • looks like Mikey Lowell is on the way to full come back and that is Great news for the Sox hopefully they can all stay healthy this year.

Isn't a little weird that after A-Rod has his meeting with the MLB that the Yankees or his Doctors (whoever) "found" that cist on his hip then he had a torn hip liberum (how ever you spell it) ? humm intresting

i think he got suspended for 9 weeks and the Yankees and A-Rod made that story up to "save face" after his "appology"

And Kieth if the REDSOX really wanted Texieria for two years he would be here by now. the truth is we don't need him we have YOUK !

              He faked the surgery?

9 week suspension , huh .... no such thing (are you really that unfamiliar with the penalties? ). Perhaps I've seen a dumber accusation, but I can't recall when.

File your complaint about Gammons' Teixeira quote with ESPN.

              • where you at the doctors with A-Rod ? cause for all you and i know the "operation" may have never happened at all it's not that hard to lie (A-Rod's done it for years)

i'm just saying it's weird that all of a sudden he's hurt after the world now knows he's a cheater and if he didn't live up to his power numbers or maybe if he was better then last year everyone would say it was cause of roids

and peter gammons is a idiot

                • Problems:

                  1. It wasn't automatically decided that he'd have surgery. Initial word was that he'd risk eventual surgery by playing through the injury. An "eventual suspension"? Option B was full scale surgery, which would put him out 4 months. Option C, arthoscopic surgery, was chosen. Are you seriously trying to convince anyone that 3 suspension alternatives were given, with the first possibly being no suspension at all? Have you followed the entire story or just bits and pieces? I'd guess the latter.

                  2. 9 weeks is worst case and is from the date of the surgery, not the start of the season. Surgery was performed March 9th, setting his return from April
20th through May 11th -- 6 to 9 weeks. A "6 to 9 week suspension", which, because suspensions are for the regular season, would actually be a "2 to 5 week suspension" ? Come on. There is no such thing.

                  3. The Players Union would crush any attempt to suspend a player for PED use before penalties were in place. It would be an easy win. Care to explain why the Players Union would bypass an easy win in favor of looking the other way? Your explanation should be entertaining.

                  4. If a miracle took place and a suspension was handed out, it would be a 50 game suspension for a first time offense. 50 games falls well after the
                  April 20th - May 11th return period.

                  5. He's going to have the surgery completed next winter. Care to explain why he'd fake that particular injury? Why not something that could simply be treated with one surgery or with rest and rehabilitation?

                  6. Your conspiracy theory doesn't merely involve A-Rod lying. You are implicating A-Rod, team officials, MLB and the Players union for covering up the "suspension", the team trainer, team doctors, hip specialist Marc Philippon, and the Vail Valley Surgery Center (Vail, Colorado). Take a bow!!

I've been saying Gammons is an idiot for years. No news there.

Probably. He signed a 1 year deal yesterday and there's no hurry for an extension since he's not even arbitration eligible at this time.

                        at Jupiter, Fla.
                        Thursday, March 12

Red Sox at the plate: Left fielder Josh Red**** led off the game with a triple, but he was stranded there. The Red Sox pushed across their first run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by shortstop Julio Lugo that scored pinch-runner Chip Ambres. Red**** delivered an RBI single, his third hit of the game, that scored Nick Green in the top of the seventh and gave Boston a 2-0 lead.

Red Sox on the mound: Starter Josh Beckett pitched four shutout innings, recorded two strikeouts and issued just one walk. Marcus McBeth gave up Mather's game-winning home run in the ninth to take the loss, his first of the spring.

Grapefruit League records: Red Sox 5-8; Cardinals 8-4

                        Up next:
The Red Sox return to Fort Myers, Fla., to host the Yankees at 7:05 p.m. ET on Friday. Tim Wakefield is the scheduled starting pitcher for Boston, and the club will welcome back David Ortiz and Jason Bay into the starting lineup now that their countries have been eliminated from the World Baseball Classic. Chien-Ming Wang will start for New York.

but he's not really needed now that it looks like lowrie is free of 3rd base with lowell seemingly healthy
