  • The Yankees made 5 more cuts after today's game:

Rule V draft pick RP Robert Fish was claimed off waivers by the Royals. He has to either stay in the majors for the entire season with KC or be offered back to the Angels for 1/2 the draft fee -- $25,000.

Rule V draft pick Daniel Turpen cleared waivers and was returned to the Red Sox.

    • The Padres sent Rule V draft pick RP George Kontos back to the Yankees. The Yankees assigned him to minor league camp. Kontos could be a key contributor in Scranton's pen. Quality arm, assuming he's 100% back from TJ surgery.

The other Rule V pick the Yankees lost, RP Lance Pendleton, is still in the mix for a spot on the Astros opening day roster.

      • ST Game 19

        Red Sox 2 Yankees 1

Sergio Mitre (oblique) missed his scheduled start. Mitre and Joba Chamberlain (oblique) won't pitch until Thursday or so as a precaution. I enjoyed watching Manny Banuelos (just turned 20 yesterday) get the start on ESPN2. He was on the wild side, but pitched effectively. Dellin Betances, who, like Banuelos, will start the year in AA, was VERY wild. 13 spring training games left.

        • Scheduled day off for the Yankees.

CC and Bartolo Colon are throwing 80-85 pitches each vs minor leaguers in a simulated game this morning -- the only players on the field are the pitcher, catcher, and hitter.

              Yankees 10 Orioles 0

Ivan Nova made a bold statement as he battles for a rotation spot: 6 no hit innings. The Yankees allowed only 1 hit in the game. A-Rod went deep.

Joba Chamberlain (oblique) won't pitch until next week for precautionary reasons -- strain, doesn't appear major.

                • I might be the craziest Yankees fan but can we not trade for a starter? Like I like our farm system, and we arguably got some of our best talent from there...Why trade that away? Sure it is uncertain but the reward is huge. Nova is a solid #4 starter I think.
Let Garcia or Mitre take the 5th spot.

Agreed. Wondering if Colon will take Mitre's spot, though.

I'm more than content with Hector Noesi and Andrew Brackman getting called up from AAA if we need another starter. I'd say Manny Banuelos from AA, too, but I believe he will have an innings limit of 150 this season.

A solid start by Phil Hughes and bombs by A-Rod and Swisher led the way.
Boone Logan's velocity was up to 92-93-- it was down to 86-88 before he was shut down for a while (elbow fatigue).

Mitre has been cleared to pitch in tomorrow's game and Joba will throw a bullpen session this weekend.

Never thought I'd say this, but I want Bartolo Colon, not Freddy Garcia, to win the #5 starter's spot (Ivan Nova is my #4). It isn't about spring training numbers, which mean nothing.... and it sure isn't about recent history, as Colon hasn't pitched 100 innings since 2005.... it's about stuff. Though Colon sits at 91-93 these days (as opposed to 97+ in his prime) I think he gives us a better chance than Garcia to win.

We'll have to see how it plays out, though, as Colon could end up in the pen, taking Sergio Mitre's spot. Joba Chamberlain (strained oblique) is scheduled to pitch in tomorrow's game.
