Nicknames, are just aliases, AKA's, and fun-and-games.

The Galloping Ghost isn't short, neither is the Count of Montefisto.

      It's all in fun.

Nicknames are a little outdated anyway.

tell that to Allen "The Answer" Iverson and David "The Admiral" Robinson.

some nick names shorten a longer name such as T.O., L.T. and D Will, others are just colorful descriptors like Rodney "Boss" Bailey and Roland "Champ" Bailey.

Ryan "Scorin" Torain -In college he was called Ryan "The Train" Torain

Ryan "Dude looks like a" Clady - Classic Berman'esque name. I'll just call him F.E.L. (Front End Loader)

Wesley "laying the" Woodyard - That's perfect, I couldn't touch that one.

Peyton "what you talkin bout" Hillis -Dude, that one is hillarious. Even if I could come up with a better "football" nickname, I'll never think of anything else when I see his name... Classic.

Spencer "Squints" Larsen - Hmmm, this one is tough... Spencer "Petty" Larsen?

Jack "Smalls" Williams - Jack "You Up" Williams

Carlton 'colon" Powell - Carlton "Bring the" Powell... eh

Josh "Yeah-Yeah" Barrett - Josh "Grin and" Barrett

              Kory "Ham" Lichtensteiger - "KLICH"

Anthony "The Jet" Alridge - AKA - Anthony Kwik Aldridge

              Added my own spin..

Old school nicknames tend to lengthen or replace a name entirely rather than just shorten the name, as is the current trend. A-Rod, J-Lo, D-Will, B-Marsh, T.O., L.T.... boring if you ask me.

I like the nicknames that replace the first name in common usage, such as James Bell, a.k.a. "Cool Papa" Bell, Jerome Dean, a.k.a. "Dizzy" Dean, or even Adam Jones, a.k.a. "Pacman" Jones.

Then you've got your add-on nicknames, such as "Joltin" Joe DiMaggio, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, or "Hammerin" Hank Aaron.

And of course, nicknames that replace the name as a whole: "The Bus", "Sweetness", and "Sultan of Swat".

I won't go into Chris Berman nicknames because his overall obnoxiousness ruins whatever clever nicknames he comes up with (or steals).

Last random note, back when The Mummy Returns came out, the preview just killed me when the narrator exclaimed, "And starring 'The Rock' as 'The Scorpion King'!
