  • 2008 Broncos vs 1997 Broncos

Is this the new face of this years Superbowl? What are your thoughts? Lets look at the offensive lineup between the 2008 Broncos and the 1997 Superbowl champ Broncos...

    1997: 2008:
    Elway QB Cutler
    McCaffery/Smith WR Marshall/Stokley/Royal
    Sharpe TE Scheffler
    Davis RB Young

So what are everyones thoughts? I think the only real lean to the 1997 team is at running back but i think this years team would give the '97 team a run for their money. Let the discussions begin...

Its way to early to tell. Ask this question in November.
IMO right now....... I say playoffs this year and SB next.

        no freaking way

terrell davis would eat our rub defense up, sharpe would kill our safetys, corners match up though. and then keith traylor ,trevor pryce, neil smith, and that defense would out do this years def. 31-20 winner 1997

This Bronco team would get obliterated if we played that 98 Broncos team.

Actually I feel like our only problem is run defense, similar to last year. Our offense is is very similar to the '97 team.

This team has a good offense but at this point, we don't hold a candle to the Super Bowl teams.

                  If just comparing the offenses...

1997 has the advantage at RB as you mention. I also would take Sharpe over Scheffler. But, at the skill positions - you are generally right. The two teams compare similiarly.

However, the big difference is on the line. The SB teams - particularly the first - were much better across the line. This line can be good and should get better, but right now the Broncos are playing to their strength. Their playmakers are in the passing game and their line is better at pass protection than run blocking. The SB teams had a line that was dominate in both phases - that's why they could run or pass against any defense. For this offense to be great, the running game will need to be more consistent and much of that will come from more consistent run blocking.

Interesting Theory but there's no comparison. I think the Broncos are looking 100 percent better then last year and I believe this team will be together for some time, still have a bit to go to get to 97 or 98 status!!

neutessa beat me to it, the line in 97' was a much more veteran line that IMO makes them better and TD was a much harder runner who can take over a game by himself, I dont think Young can do that. Sharpe was a better blocker and a bigger mismatch also IMO.

Im kind of forced to say I think Casino Royale and Mr 140 are more talented than EddieMac and Rod so we'll call WR a push.

As far as teams, 97' had a punch YOU in the mouth type defense with blitzes mixed in and jsut an aggressive attitude, the 08 denver is getting close to looking like Coyer's defense of take it in the pooper from 20 to 20 then try to stop you froom scoring a TD. I think our defense is very vanilla and while we have great players they dont make great plays.

Case in point is the DL, talented DT's in Thomas and Robertson and yet no true statistical production from them yet. DE... I pray every Sunday to see a DE 'other than Doom's occassional great sack' look like they will do anything for a sack. They look like they only bull-rush and when they do that it takes so long to collapse the pocket or beat an OT, too long as a matter of fact and the QB can usually get the ball to a forgotten about receiver and make a lot of us yell "why can't we cover that guy... so and so sucks for not sticking with him for the 13 seconds he had to throw the ball".

Maybe you haven't been watching our pass defense.

As to the original topic, please wait until we actually make the playoffs before comparing this team to our Super Bowl winning teams.

97 team hands down almost everywhere. The experience alone makes them better. Most of that group was battle tested, especially at QB.

                            Well said

I think, as I have seen someone else post, that this team is alot like the 96' team. It has a lot of offense, and very little defense.

We might not have the same running attack, but I think this one might be even more potent in the passing game.

Or maybe we can go back in time, and combined the to teams some how. So who would you start, Cutler or Elway. What WR's. No question on RB's or CB's or Safety. LB's?
