Okay. Well, I'll be a fan of your son's, but only your son's.

When Ed Donatell and Jay Rodgers are in meetings or on the practice field with the DBs, I doubt if who was drafted by whom will be anywhere in their consciousness.

Josh Barrett's redshirt senior year at ASU was the first year of the Dennis Erickson regime. Barrett's position coach and D-coordinator were new, new terminology, expectations and coaching "style". His benching was supposed to be a result of injuries; pectoral strain, quad contusion and knee sprain-sounds like a big hitter to me. That's way in the past now.

Coming to the Broncos, Barrett was characterized by some as "looks like Tarzan-plays like Jane". He got to play in '08 and did OK ... for a rookie. Only two safeties from '08 have been retained, Barrett and Fox. He finds himself in the same boat as all the other players retained from Shanahan's team-new coaches, system, competition and a lot of pressure. He was one of the players who worked out at Redrocks theater recently. Working out with tough mountain men like Jeb Putzier is a good sign.

Both Josh Barrett and David Bruton are brainy young men. The Broncos are lucky to have them competing for the team.

I agree with your stance on the “who cares who really drafted who”......to an extent. The position coaches we have are fundamentally sound and are going to put the best people in the best places for them and for the team. The only one that probably even gets shaded is Smith, I’d bet donatell is aware of the limb that they went out on to choose him, and will kind of tailor some things to help him show his stuff and give him a look that some might not.

That being said, i would be shocked if donatell hadn't watched some sort of tape or been involved in evaluating the scouting reports to wade through his choices/input at draft time, giving him a vested stake in the newly drafted DB's.

No offense sam, but haven't ever really been that high on Barrett, but not down on him either. I do have supreme confidence given our coaches that not only will the best team be fielded, but the future will be protected at the same time.

The greatest thing about all of this turnover/drafting/evaluating/cuts is: If you make the 53 man roster you'll know that these coaches WANT you here.

If we decide to keep an extra LB such as Lee Robinson, Nick Greison, or Mario Haggan, than Josh Barrett doesn't make the roster.

If we decide to keep a hybrid CB/S, such as DJ Johnson, than Barrett doesn't make the roster.

If we keep a 7th WR, like NE did last season, than Barrett doesn't make the roster.

If we decide to keep a 7th D-linemen, such as Pedescleaux, Davis, Clemons, or another team's cut, than Barrett doesn't make the roster.

If we decide to keep a pure return specialist, than Barrett doesn't make the roster.

However, if we choose to keep a 5th Safety, Barrett does make the roster, but all these other players likely do not.

So, I think he's far from a sure thing, and squarely on the bubble. He has to show he's far superior to David Bruton to warrant foregoing all these other options.
The recent article posted about Lee Robinson got me thinking...

Do you think that a player's chance of getting claimed off waivers (once submitted for the PS) comes into play here?

I'm thinking that Robinson's chance of getting picked up would be greater than that of Pedescleaux, Davis, or DJ Johnson so I could see them going the "extra LB" route (in this case) partly for that reason.

Absolutely. In order for a team to claim a player, that player must then be placed on the 53 man roster for "x" amount of time (I forget the x, maybe 4 weeks).

Without a doubt, the easiest positions to transition to and contribute immediately are RB and LB. LBs also tend to be special teams demons, so that helps as well.

In regards to us, Pedescleaux has the size but is extremely raw, while Davis doesn't have the size though he's somewhat polished. I do not see another team claiming either of them at this time. DJ Johnson is big enough to contribute on special teams, so he has increased value, but unless he blows it out in Training Camp, I don't see another team claiming him either, though he's more likely than the DEs to me.

Which brings us to Robinson. Outside of Chris Baker and possibly Blake Schlueter, I think he would be the next most likely guy to get claimed. If we cut him, I don't think the team should expect him to make it to the PS. But then, I also think we'll keep him instead of a 5th Safety, 7th WR, 5th RB/FB, 10th O-linemen, and the like.
