It's as simple as this....
Sundays gave vs the Redskins in the biggest game the Broncos have played in
recent years.
It is also the biggest game of Kyle Orton's career, and the most pivitol game of Josh McDaniels young career as a Head Coach.
Why?
Because in the wake of getting dominated in recent weeks against the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers, the Broncos have games coming up against a Chargers team that is going to be loaded for bear, followed by games against the NY Giants and Indianapolis Colts.
The Broncos 6-0 dream start could very easily become a 6-6 nightmare.
...and don't kid yourself, the Redskins are just the type of team that can do it.
Whatever they are, they are not a bad defensive team, and if they can manage the ball, play field position, and shut down Orton and the Broncos offense, this game could easily go drastically wrong for the Broncos.
Now, win, and suddenly your 7-2 and have put the breaks on a brief losing streak against two of the premier defenses in the NFL, and a win the following week against the Chargers would almost all but guarantee an AFC West Division title for the Broncos.
Win, and Kyle Orton can probably wrap up a lucrative contract extension and make a home for himself in Denver...at least for a little while anyway.
Lose, and he could find himself benched in a few weeks for Chris Simms.
The bottom line is, Kyle Orton presented the best of what Josh McDaniels thought he could replace Jay Cutler with on short notice.
Do you really think he is the QB to get a lengthy extension and be the QB McDaniels ties his proverbial horse to?
I don't believe it for a moment and never did.
However it happens, I still firmly believe Orton is a one year deal in Denver, and inevitably the wheels have to come off the illusion before the Broncos compound their mistakes and commit to him long term.
To me, the move to Chris Simms seems inevitble as he is signed through next year, with a second year QB in Tom Brandstater waiting to develop, and the Broncos have to give serious consideration to drafting another one.
To me, Sunday is the beginning of the end of Kyle Orton in Denver.
