  • Report: Ex-NFL player Current dies

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/F...t-wound-011712

Former NFL player Michael Current was found dead in an Oregon wildlife refuge from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Statesman Journal reported Tuesday.

Current, 66, reportedly shot himself Monday at the Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, about 25 miles west of Salem.

The former Ohio State Buckeye's body was found on a viewing platform inside the park at around 9:00am local time by off-duty paramedics, according to the Journal.

An Ohio native, the former offensive lineman played 13 seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins. Current was drafted by the Broncos in the third round of the 1967 AFL/NFL Draft.

"We are always saddened to learn of a tragedy involving a former Bronco, and our hearts go out to Mike's family and friends during this most difficult time," the Broncos said in a statement issued Tuesday.

According to the Journal, Current, who lived in Las Vegas, served as a youth football coach in Silverton, Ore., about 15 miles east of Salem, during the mid-2000s.

"He was an awesome guy, and all he wanted to do was help kids in his community," vice president of Silverton Pop Warner youth football Jim McIntire told the Journal. "The kids absolutely loved him."

The six-foot-five, 274-pound lineman became an author during his post-football career, penning a memoir of his days on the field, entitled, "Rememberin' Life in the Trenches." He also wrote a mystery novel, called "Bush Justice," published in 2002

During his nine years as an offensive tackle for the Denver Broncos, Mike Current spent his Sundays rushing into a booming football stadium. Last Sunday, accused of molesting three children and facing more than 30 years in prison, Current retreated to a quiet, secluded overlook on the edge of an Oregon wildlife refuge.

About 9 a.m. Monday, two off-duty paramedics, returning from a training session, drove down two-lane Oregon 22 and pulled into the overlook. There, they found Current, dead from a gunshot to the head.

A 20-gauge shotgun and a single spent cartridge were found nearby.

The 66-year-old apparently shot himself sometime overnight at the viewing area along the Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, said Sgt. Michael Holsapple of the Polk County Sheriff's Office. There were no signs of foul play or a struggle in the pullout along the road northeast of the small town of Dallas.

In November, Current, who lived in Silverton from the mid-2000s to 2010, was charged with five counts of first-degree sexual assault and one count of luring a minor, according to the Marion County district attorney's office. The alleged offenses occurred at an unspecified address in Marion County.

Current was accused of sexually assaulting three victims — all 14 or younger — at least five times between 2004 and 2010. He allegedly used pornography, such as videos and photos, to elicit sex from the children.

"It's just tragic for all involved," said former Broncos linebacker Randy Gradishar. "I hadn't been in contact with Mike for a long time, but it's just tragic to hear."

On Christmas morning, Current was extradited from Las Vegas, where he was living. He spent the following week in the Marion County Jail in Salem, Ore., before posting a $270,000 bond. He later moved into a hotel room in Salem.

Shortly afterward, Current was admitted to the hospital after having a harmful reaction to sleeping pills, Holsapple said. His three adults sons arrived in town just after their father was hospitalized.

At the end of last week, Current returned to his hotel room, and his sons left Oregon.

On Tuesday, Current was set to enter a plea on the charges. He faced a minimum of six years and three months for each of the five sex-abuse charges, a total of more than 30 years without parole, and no chance at reduced time.

Temperatures were frigid Sunday night and snow flurries drifted through the area, Holsapple said. Authorities, who did not find a message or note, are investigating the possibility that someone was with Current or dropped him off at the overlook, which is about 14 miles from his hotel.

There were no vehicles at the scene when Current was found, Holsapple said.

While living in Silverton, Current coached eighth-grade football players for two seasons, said Jim McIntire, vice president of the local Pop Warner youth football league.

"He was an excellent coach, from what we understand," McIntire said. "The kids really liked playing for him."

The alleged assaults were not connected to Current's position with the team.

Current played for the Broncos from 1967 to 1975. He was a third-round draft choice in 1967, the 58th overall pick.

"We are always saddened to learn of a tragedy involving a former Bronco, and our hearts go out to Mike's family and friends during this most difficult time," the Broncos said in a statement Tuesday.

Current also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins. The 6-foot-5, 274-pound offensive lineman started in 105 of the 108 games he played for the Broncos.

A Lima, Ohio, native, he attended Ohio State University, where he played for legendary coach Woody Hayes.

Gradishar, the former Broncos great and fellow Ohio State alum, said he hadn't had contact with Current for a long time and did not know his former teammate was dead until a reporter told him.

Gradishar said that after he became a first-round pick for the Broncos in 1974, it was Current who showed the rookie around Denver and "kind of welcomed me to the team."
