  • DP: Broncos will give quarterback Adam Weber a good look in offseason workouts

So the offseason slow news cycle starts

    Link

Today's question comes from Rob Ridley in Grand Junction:

Q: There is a lot of speculation about Tim Tebow and his backup or replacement for next year. From the little we saw of Adam Weber in preseason, he didn't look too bad. There have been some good quarterbacks hidden in the second and third spots that, when given a chance, surprised some teams. What is your assessment of Weber?

A: Rob, the Broncos thought enough of him to quickly sign him to a "futures" contract following the end of the season with Saturday night's loss to the Patriots.

Weber was one of eight players on the Broncos' practice squad who were signed to those deals. Futures contracts are for the 2012 season for players who are not under contract with a team when its season ends.

The contracts for practice squad players end at the conclusion of the season. Contracts for players on the Broncos' current 53-man roster, on injured reserve or who are slated to become free agents don't expire until March.
So, that's why Weber and the other players on the Broncos' practice squad are already signed for the 2012 season when players on the active roster don't yet know their fates.

The Broncos certainly liked Weber's approach this season — backup quarterback Brady Quinn spent plenty of extra time on the field working with him — as well as the arm strength he showed in practices.

As a prospect, Weber was one of the biggest snubs by the NFL scouting combine a year ago. He was not among the 18 quarterbacks who were invited despite his impressive collegiate résumé.

In his career at Minnesota, he was just the fifth quarterback in Big Ten history to throw for at least 10,000 yards, and he started a Big Ten-record 50 consecutive games. His 11,603 yards of total offense is second all time in conference history.

That kind of experience showed in how he went about his business through the season. His biggest hurdle moving forward will be his size — he measured 6-foot-1 before the draft and weighed 209 pounds.

That was after being listed on the Gophers' roster at 6-3, 221 pounds, which is why the first thing scouts do at any pro day workout, all-star game or the combine is measure and weigh the prospects.

Because of his height, Weber will have to function as shorter quarterbacks do in the NFL, and that is to be quicker with the ball, quicker with his decisions. Dree Brees is often considered the current top-shelf model for the undersized quarterback, but he also is considered the fastest decision-maker in the league.

He gets the ball out before the rush closes in and closes off his throwing lanes. Weber would have to do the same.

He has shown athleticism at times, and scouts took note of his 39-inch vertical jump at his pro day workout last year.

Weber isn't considered a good bet to run the read option, so his signing also could be considered at least some evidence that the Broncos will try to move Tebow into a more traditional look in the passing game in the offseason, with the read option being a change-of-pace item.

Either way, the Broncos decided they wanted to continue to take a look at Weber, and this time they'll do it with the offseason workouts he didn't have last season as a rookie because of the lockout.

      This is so misleading

I hope it doesn't start anything bad

If Tebow doesn't pan out I'd love for Weber to come out and be a big surprise

        It is GREAT news.

It means that we are NOT gonna waste a draft pick on a QB...
we will draft impact players instead of a rookie QB to ride behind Tim.

I expect EFX to hire an experienced Free Agent QB....
to compete alongside Tebow and Weber.

We have to use our draft picks for guys who will contribute.

        This is GREAT news.

          They'll still draft one. '

And signing Weber to a "futures contract" is not a sign that he's on the team. He could be signed by any team in the offseason.

No. A futures contract means he has a contract with this football team and cannot sign any where else. If cut or waived yes he can be signed by somewhere else but otherwise. he has a contract with this team.

I don't think that's right. The CBA is set up to where signing on an active roster takes precedence over practice squad. If another team wanted to sign them to an active roster, a practice squad contract can't trump that.

I think the "futures contract" trumps another team signing them to their practice squad, and lets the player know he's got a guaranteed gig on the practice squad next year.

Does't mean they won't put Weber on the active roster. I'm just saying that too much can't be read into it. He's vulnerable to being snatched until he's on the roster -- you can't really "park" players on the practice squad and prevent other teams from getting them.

But I could be wrong. It happened one time.

Considering that the Gophers were 17-33 with Weber as QB, I guess that tells us that "passing yards" and "total offense yards" doesn't necessarily equate to wins.

Your going to use his record with the Golphers against him. A team record is that. A TEAM record. A win or lose is not dependant on one player.

There is no practise squad over the off season. He will come to camp next year and have a full off season as a Denver Bronco player. Like Champ Bailey, Elvis Dumervil, Von Miller, Willis Mcgahee ect. Once the pre season finishes and if he doesn't make the final roster then he will be waived. If he isn't picked up he can go to any practise sqaud.

This is a pocket change move for Denver. It's no more than guaranteeing that they"ll have a "camp arm" in training camp who"s familar with the playbook to help work out the other offensive players.

It isn"t an indication of untapped greatness in Weber. It isn't an indication of how the Offense will evolve. It certainly doesn't mean that EFX are satisfied with the current QB situation...
                    "That's a crap question."

Weber threw 51 interceptions in college. You think that might have had anything to do with some of those team losses? Tebow, for comparison, threw 16 interceptions in college.

This article means nothing. All it says is they will look at him in the offseason. Same as every other player. They also signed Sealver Siliga to reserve contract. Does that mean they aren't going to draft a DT?

Of course it mattered. I am not saying Weber was a great QB or anything like that. Just that the record is a team stat. For example John Elway had a losing record in college and never played in a bowl game. Worked out alright I think.

                            you mad.

                            Anyways.

Romo 2.0? If Weber has a by desire to be a startingQB in the NFL I have no doubt in my mind he will be working his tail off to make the most of his opportunity in camp. I like that he was putting in extra time after practice and that quinn was helping him. Quinn will most likely move on to a team that will give him a better shot at starting. I know wener went undrafted for a reason he wasnt a highly rated prospect and I know he didnt have the greatest career in college but it's the nfl now and none of that matters its all about what you can do at this level. He is gonna get a fair shake and it will be interesting to see what happens in camp.
