And what makes you think that Wolfe is replacing Ayers? Teams are playing a lot more rotational pass rushes and moving guys around on the line. All indications point to the fact that Wolfe can plan LDE/DT and move around on the line.

Since it's relevant to the thread topic, I just thought I'd let you guys know that Robert Ayers has been splitting 1st team reps at LDE with Derek Wolfe and Jason Hunter.

If he loses his starting spot, he won't be of much use as a 3rd down pass-rushing specialist/ nickel defensive lineman (considering that run stopping is his best attribute and pass-rushing is his worst).

It's very much the same with Ayers.
        This.

In finance and economics, there is a set of costs called "sunk costs". Sunk costs are money that have already been spent and therefore should not be part of any analysis of whether or not to continue to invest in an area. Where a player was selected in the draft is a sunk cost. You have to ignore when evaluating the player.

Ayers hasn't lived up to his draft position but that doesn't change the fact that he is a solid contributor to this defense and should be kept around until his FUTURE salary is too much to justify paying for a guy with his EXPECTED production.

There is no reason to cut a guy like Ayers because he hasn't lived up to his draft choice.

Based on the your commentary, you are definitely not punch drunk!!!

Lets see if Ayers can up his game, and (again) prove that he is worthy of being a steady force on D. And as has been mentioned, it's not just about the sacks. There is much more to it than that.

Dmac and Al just said Ayers is 2nd string right now.

It's true that Ayers isn't responsible for the fact that he was drafted by the Broncos at #18 of the first round instead of Clay Matthews.

But, right now he's playing 2nd team defense behind Jason Hunter this off-season, an undrafted FA who was released by the Packers and Lions. Ayers is looking more and more like a bust, no matter how much fans might want to see him have a "breakout season". It appears he might not even START, let alone become an impact player!

If he continues playing backup to Hunter, that means the coaches are dissatisfied with his performance and see Hunter as the better and more versatile player. Since Hunter is not exactly a super-star that doesn't say anything good about Ayers.

Yeah he's a good kid - hope Ayers gets it together.

JDR really spoke highly of Hunter - something like "man I love Hunter!" yesterday. Maybe Hunter is just lighting it up.

Hunter has played great when he filled in for Doom on a few plays last year. He plays the run better than Doom and can apply QB pressure. I'd love to see more of him in the rotation this season.

I saw the interview with JDR and he didn't sound too high on Ayers...

Hunter was just interviewed by Big Al and D-Mac on The Fan and he's just got a nasty streak in him that I love. He spent much of the day yelling at the offense to run the ball at him. "I want you to run it right at #90!"

He's got his weight up to 270 and he's a lot more solid and stronger than last year. He dedicated the off-season to working out intensively with the conditioning coaches and following the nutritional guides to add muscle and he's a specimen.

I think he beats out Robert Ayers. To play LDE you have to want to go up against double-teams all day and it's a "desire" position. He was signed by the Packers in 2006 as an undrafted FA and made the 53 man roster. He played in 14 games that year and was a contributor on special teams, but in 2007-08 he didn't see much action and was released by the Packers after that season. He was picked up by the Lions, didn't see much action in 2009 and was cut again. This is his last chance and clearly he's giving it everything he has.

He just seems a lot hungrier player than Robert Ayers who was a high first round pick and never had to worry about his roster spot.

I have to say that Hunter may be the success story of this off-season so far. (Danny Trevathan and Jeremiah Johnson are also looking really good as is Stokely).

Ayers out of the line up....DJ gone for at least half the season......Elvis suspended by Goodell. It's not looking good for Fox ball and Del Rio needs to pull a rabbit out of his hat.

When exactly did this happen? Last I checked, Dumervil isn't facing any sort of consequences this season for what happened.

I love Jason Hunter. He's a very balanced defensive end in terms of run stuffing and pass-rushing. He's also tough, and I like that mentality

Robert Ayers was relaxing in Jamaica while the other players were starting the strength and conditioning program. And now he is apparently losing his spot to Jason Hunter. Ayers worked with the 2nd-team defense for the 3rd straight day. Derek Wolfe will also play DE on the strong side. Even if Ayers starts the season as the 1st-team strongside DE, we might witness a heavy rotation with Hunter and Wolfe in the mix. So, it looks like Ayers' time is already over. He will stay on the roster, and he will get on the field, but I doubt he will ever be an impact player to justify his draft status and pre-draft hype.

It does not matter if some fans think a player deserves 4, 5 years to prove himself. The NFL keeps moving. New coaches, new players. The Broncos renewed their depth at DE. Wolfe, Malik Jackson. New defensive coordinator. The guy that drafted and pampered Ayers was fired in 2010. Ayers is not a pass rushing specialist. Derek Wolfe will eventually get some reps at DE, and he is a big DE that can play against the run. Wolfe might also take Ayers' spot on 3rd down, working as a DT when Von Miller moves to DE. There is plenty of work left before the season starts, but Ayers is not on the right track.
