Today's tight ends are more versatile than in the older days of football. When looking at tight ends we shouldn't discount the guys that were fierce blockers as well as decent-good receivers.

As pass-catching tight ends go, the numbers are plainly in favor Sharpe but looking only at receptions is a disservice to the old-timers.

Any Broncos fan should know better than to bash Tony Gonzalez; we've been burned by him too many times to not respect his top-tier skills. Gonzalez got off to a faster start in his career than Sharpe did and Shannon did miss most of one season. It'll be interesting to see how long Tony plays and how healthy he stays.

So far this season, Sharpe has more catches (31 to 26) while Gonzalez has more yards (411 to 351) while they're tied in TD's at 4 apiece. So, I'm not sure you can say that one is playing better than the other right now. But considering Shannon is so old and decrepit you'd think Tony would be leading easily, wouldn't you? Hmm...

Anyway, Gonzalez definitely has the chance of being a Hall of Famer but people sure do jump the gun on players like Heap and Shockey. I'm just glad that Sharpe graced the Broncos with his presence for most of his career and I'm grateful to Shanny for having the sense to correct his mistake (I know, the salary cap) and bring Shannon back to the Broncos to end his career.

Not by any means saying that Shannon is Denver's only means of attack. I KNOW thats not true.

But Denver needs Shannon far more than KC needs Tony.

          Or he would have more.

3 Super Bowl Rings can't be wrong... that's three more than Gonzales currently has. Shannon is the Jerry Rice of his position, the rest are playing catch up, maybe they will one day, who knows, the same way Moss or Harrison may catch up to Rice one day.

I don't know. With the 3rd-string QB starting for us, I'd probably agree with you. But until our recent injuries, the Broncos have had good luck with their starting receivers.

The Chiefs have had solid but not dominating receivers as far as I can remember in recent years. For instance, last season was the Holmes and Gonzalez show in KC. Tony had 10 more catches than KC's top wide receiver. In contrast, Shannon was 3rd on the Broncos behind both Rod and Ed (and he was 28 behind Rod).

If you took Shannon out of the Broncos' offense it would suck but they'd survive (at least when the team was healthy). If you took Gonzalez out of the Chiefs' offense, I think they'd be seriously disadvantaged.

I'm not sleighting Sharpe in any way but I think Gonzalez is more crucial to the Chiefs' offensive success.

Any Chiefs fans care to comment on the importance of Tony to your offense?

Of Tony's 7 TD's last year, can anyone tell me how many came after Priest got hurt?

According to the NFL's stats, Gonzalez didn't have a TD in the Chiefs' final two games without Holmes. It could be the defenses clamped down on Gonzalez since he became KC's top receiver after Priest was out of the lineup.
