  • 2nd Chance for Brandon McManus

So I've been thinking that maybe putting this kid on the kickoff team could be his way to get back into being our full-time kicker.

I know he's not loved here on these forums by any means but here me out. McManus has one heck of a leg, that much has already been shown. Last I checked he was ranked #2 or #3 in touchbacks in the NFL which is pretty darn good.

Also from what I was hearing on 850 KOA was that McManus had a groin injury at the time that he was missing a lot of those kicks i.e. he was pulling his kicks short because he was scared of re-injuring himself further.

I'd like to see him become the franchise kicker for this team because Connor Barth as good as he is now is not long for the NFL. He's an older kicker with an older leg.

If McManus can step up and make the field goals it would be nice to see him get another shot, plus it would keep us from wasting a draft pick on another kicker.

    Thoughts?

Barth is only 28 but most likely they will battle it out in camp next year. The whole situation is similar to Elam and Prater. Prater was the kickoff specialist and eventually our kicker once he got coached up

Elway has said they like his potential as a full time starter. I don't think it's a coincidence that Elway has paired a accuracy kicker with a power kicker.
A healthy Kenneth Dixon is a top 5 NFL RB.

Did he have a groin injury from day 1? Early on it was evident that he had accuracy problems on extra points. Even though they were going through they were either hooking or slicing a bit, and that of course would lead to missed field goals from further out.

I know that McManus has a bigger leg, but I don't even want to question Connor Barth's status as the starter until he misses a FG. And not a 55 yarder that just eeked wide. Besides, I noticed that his distance has looked better since the KC game anyways. As mentioned, Connor is only 28, and kickers can be very effective into their 40s (i.e. Adam Vinatieri), so if Barth can remain this dependable, I wouldn't even consider a change.

            I agree entirely.

If McManus wants to be a Broncos kicker, he will wait his turn for the opportunity.

The above said it best, Barth has been money for us so far. Its his job to lose.

Barth is a franchise kicker if he is fully back from injury. He's almost 86% for his career. The one he made from 49 had at least another 5 yards on it. Distance isn't a factor unless you're talking 55-60 and he probably can make those in Denver.

Elway said that Mcmanus is a guy they like a lot. Just thought the moment was too big for him right now. They brought him back with the intention on getting him comfortable and consistent to replace and ultimately be our FG kicker and Place kicker.

It will likely take a year or two. If he never gets it then we have barth who is still young and solid. If he does it will be just like it was with Prater. Extremely strong but inaccurate. Cut from multiple teams and finally coached here to be a boss!
                    So far:
                    FA- Melvin Gordon. Brandon Scherff
                    1. Kenneth Murray LB; 2. Shenault WR; 2B. Biadazz Center, 3. OT

I think that right now it would be best to stay status quo for this year. Yes, it costs us a valuable 53 man spot, but I feel that we need both the accuracy of Field goals and the distance on kickoffs.

McMannus and Barth can fight it out in training camp next year. May the best man win!

I think it's Barth's job until/if McManus demonstrates accuracy. The FO made it loud and clear that kickoffs landing at the 12 weren't acceptable. I don't know if that's just the limit of Barth's range, or if he's still recovering from injury. But either way, no team carries 2 kickers on purpose. It works for now, but the moment McManus or someone else comes along that can do both, I think we switch. I'm happy for the rest of this season certainly with what we've got.

And people were worried about him being on Smith. "Our field our show."

I freaking love this guy. He cracks me up how he speaks. I could listen to him all day. However Talib, the next time you intercept a ball, please bring the ball into you so someone doesn't come up behind you and knock it out. You were scaring the crap out of me. That's it.
