  • Dave Magazu

I just read that the Bears fired him today, this is surprising for 3 reasons:
    1. He's been with John Fox since his early days in Carolina.
    2. As much of a dumpster fire as the Bear were this year, the o-line was fairly decent. They were 17th in running the ball (Magazu designed the run game) BUT were tied for 4th in average yards per carry at 4.6 yards per carry. And they were tied for 7th in fewest sacks allowed.
    3. He's one of the best o-line coaches in the league

Whoever gets him is getting a great coach. Hopefully whoever the new coach and OC are put some serious thought into bringing Dave Magazu back to Denver. I would even support bringing McCoy back if he can get Magazu.

That's crazy, can't believe he would be let go with Fox staying. I hope he stays available long enough for us to bring him back.

I guess they decided to replace him rather than the OC, of course what Magazu was in charge of did fairly well, while the offense as a whole struggled. And with McCoy available, it would have been fairly easy to get a competent OC in position.

Screw it, hire Magazu right now and give him a title. I don't care if it's Ball Inflation Quality Control Specialist. Or make it Assistant to the Associate Director of Head Coach Prospects Transition Team. Just get him on the payroll so he's available for our next Head Coach.

Well Magazu and McCoy are available there's our offensive line coach and our offensive Coordinator.

I'll we need to do is get Wade Phillips inked and have them ready for the hiring of either Kyle Shanahan or Vance Joseph.

Shanahan runs a different system than both McCoy and Magazu. His is a purer form of the zone running system, Magazu's running system is a mix of all things except triple option. I do think Magazu will go wherever McCoy is hired, hopefully it's Denver (for Magazu that is) but likely not if Shanahan gets the job. In that case we'll probably instead get Bobby Turner installing the running system.

If Shanahan were to come, he probably would bring Bobby Turner for the running game and Matt LaFleur as OC. LaFleur has been with Shanahan in Houston, Washington and Atlanta as QB coach. An Atlanta FA available too is WR Taylor Gabriel. He can be used like the way KC uses Tyreek Hill.

I'm not sure Atlanta would let both go. They'd probably allow one to leave but they'd block the other one to keep some consistency on their offense. My guess is they'd let Turner go because of his past in Denver.

                    Turner
                    Knapp stays as QB coach

so how do these things usually get decided? I thought the head coach makes the final decision on who his o line coach is, not the organization?

My guess is that Kyle Shanahan becomes the HC and he brings John Benton to be the OL coach. Benton coached the Texans OL for many years. He worked with Kubiak when Kyle was the OC and also when Rick Dennison was the OC. Benton is the assistant OL coach for the Jaguars, but I guess he's available now that Gus Bradley is gone.
