  • Greatest Denver Coaches

    Who do y'all think are the greatest Denver coaches ever? You can pick two of the same sport.

    1. Shanahan ainec. Coach of the most popular team in town. Two titles. 7 playoff appearances.

    2. Dan Reeves. Perennial playoff contender and class act.

    3. Issel or Karl. Don't know really...

    4. Hurdle.

    5. Marc Crawford.

    Live in South Carolina- so not really for me to judge beyond the Broncos (am an Orioles/Hornets/Hurricanes fan otherwise). That said- from afar (and Broncos-biased) I would say:

    1. Mike Shanahan (2 World Championships- and either '96 or '05 could have easily meant #3 and automatic HOF, think people sometimes forget just how dominant he was- particularly 96-98);

    2. Dan Reeves [3 AFC Championships, key- along with Elway and Bowlen- in taking Broncos from "one hit wonders" (i.e. Miller/Orange Crush '77) to top tier organization];

    3. George Karl (no rings- but a very significant national figure/personality in the sport, some great regular seasons);

    4. Gary Kubiak (giving credit for '97 and '98 rings as OC, plus his own World Championship in '15 as an HC); and

    5. Clint Hurdle ('07 NL Pennant)

    *Always felt Avs were about the talent on the ice (Sakic/Forsberg/Roy, etc.). Might even be inclined to say they could have done more all things being equal. Perhaps that's unfair though...

      If college sports count, then former University of Denver hockey coach George Gwozdecky deserves to be in the running right below Mike Shanahan. Back to back National Champs and a great overall record.

        No Nuggets list is complete without Doug Moe at the top. IMHO.

          How can you forget about Doug Moe. He lead the Nuggets to the post season 9 straight years and was NBA coach of the year in 1987. This is back when the Nuggets actually played basketball.

            Red Miller needs to be in the conversation for best Denver Bronco coaches.

                Any one who doesn't add Joe Collier to their list should be ashamed and Reeves firing him disqualified him from being on the list at all IMHO

                Doug Moe Marc Crawford (Avalanche) Bob Hartley also and George Karl

                        But were they successful because of their coaching or was it they had the best talent money could buy? Both Stanley Cup teams benefited from getting a mass injection of VERY talented players especially Crawford. Hartley had a great base to build from and the added Borque and Blake.

                          Do you remember Denvers Defense in 87 and 88? Horrible, absolutely horrible. The game had passed up old Joe Collier. Reeves did the right thing letting him go and bringing in Wade Phillips.
