This is a topic I know that you and I were eye to eye on, pretty much as far back as I can recall. There are others too. It really bothered me for a while, and made me question Elway and the brass. And not that a vet QB is the problem for me, it's "who"! Heck, I looked around the league and was a bit envious of the KC's, Baltimore's, Houston's and so on, who have found their long term QBs, and at a very young age. Here we were, going from one mediocre vet to another, and somehow it was rationalized.
So maybe I was being a bit harsh towards our management, but the routine was starting to get stale. And yes, it was hard to decipher whether or not we had 2 very bad situations - QB and Oline, or a combo thereof. Once Lock took over, it was a bit clearer that QB was the bigger problem, though we need an Oline reinforcement or two this offseason.
It will be interesting to see if Lock....and the offense...can continue to get better and do it consistently through an entire season while hitting the peak at the right time.Leave a comment:

What do you mean "only option"? We could have done the intelligent thing and just kept Keenum for the final year of his contract, rather than pay him to play in Washington. He likely would have gotten benched by the time Flacco did and we would have both an extra 4th rounder as well as several million more in cap space. All while retaining the better of the two QBs.
Flacco and Keenum are largely on the same level as players, but Keenum has been marginally better the last few years. Flacco has had one of the league's weaker arms since 2014, I've deatailed that ad nauseam with has yards per attempt, average depth of throw, and throw distance in relation to the sticks all being among the league's worst in the span. Worse than Keenum there, without a doubt.
Flacco's accuracy was fine, but was definitely not an improvement in any significant amount over Keenum's. More, Flacco's mobility, pocket presence, and athleticism in general were markedly worse than Keenum.
Really, while Flacco was worse than Keenum in most ways, he also cost us a 4th round pick and an extra 25.5m in cap space(his 18.5m hit + Keenum's 7m dead money). These were factors we all knew at the time, and were major reasons why it was an obviously terrible move from the get-go.
If we'd had a better play caller, I think it could have worked. Scangarello simply did not adapt his scheme to the QB he had.
Not a great move in retrospect, but not as crazy-town as advertised. Flacco did have a much higher ceiling that may have been attainable with better scheming.Leave a comment:

So I realize we still have discussions on Flacco’s salary and value as a backup but it’s honestly still a bit funny to me that this thread still has so much legs.Leave a comment:

JF was the only option at the time to replace CK. He had a better arm and was more accurate. But, having a new team, coaching staff and a poor O-line, JF couldn't get his footing. I'm not going to apologize for supporting JF. It's easy taking the negative side on an aging QB that has been benched for a younger player. I could do that with hundreds of players in the NFL. I just don't think saying, "I told you so", applies here.

Another thing that bothers me about Flacco is how he totally gave up on Hamilton. I understand why your confidence wouldn't be high but don't give up on a team mate.
I think a big part of Hamilton coming on late in the season is because Lock worked with him as backups and gave Hamilton a chance. I don't know if Flacco would have ever thrown another pass to Hamilton.Leave a comment:

I was not happy with Flacco but for some time I have said the Bronco offense needs 2 years so I did not put up as much of a fight as some posters did. I knew the offense in 2019 was going to be bad unless we pulled off a miracle trade for one of the top QBs in the NFL.
One of my Flacco projections was we would be in the league leaders in sacks again. Flacco was sacked 26 times in 8 games. So assuming that would have added up to 52 sacks in 16 games that would have put us top 4 in sacks allowed. For some reason two guys who never played in the NFL were sacked 14 times in 8 games Lock a rookie was sacked 5 times in 5 games.
I know it is hard to project what a NFL season would be from 5 games but 1 sack a game would put us at 16 sacks for the season...in 2019 no team in the NFL gave up less than 22 sacks.
Flacco is the worst statue QB in the game and even worse he likes to throw the ball deep as we saw many times in 2019 he would pass on a open short guy to wait to throw the deep pass.Leave a comment:

I say, just wait till he learns the game and gets his mechanics down!!!! FTR, his mechanics were not too shabby...Leave a comment:
