I think Joe would actually do a very fine job in selecting another party if it came to that.

I also think he would need to stick around for the long term when Britney takes over. I don’t know why but I just can’t help but picture Cameron Diaz in the movie any given Sunday when Brittany is mentioned. Guess because of her young age.

It's hard to keep major players after a SB win. We lost several, a few became financially liabilities and the big one retired. This is what parody is about in the NFL.

There is zero evidence yet this years draft will prove to be stellar.

Zero evidence to prove otherwise, but there was nothing this game that reflected poorly on our draft class this year.

Risner has been a stud thus far hands down, Lock is literally an extra pick, his injury is unfortunate but I'm not complaining about a young QB with potential developing while we see how Flacco does. Fant hasn't proved or disproved his hype. We got 3 players that were all slotted anywhere from pick 15-35 for 2 picks in the top 40, that alone was stellar IMO. Hollins and Winfree have both shown flashes and our UDFAs seemed to be one of our usual strengths.

The only person who got picked apart last night was Isaac Yiadom in a gross mismatch. Not sure the whole details there but Yiadom panning out is irrellevant to last year being amazing with Lindsay/Freeman, Chubb, Sutton, and Jewel all starting. Yiadom, Fumagalli, and Hamilton are all getting playing time and Keyshawn Bierria is still on the teams and lighting it up in special teams.

The Denver Broncos finally have a new head coach.

Now they need a new general manager.

Former Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has moved into the head coach’s office at Dove Valley. Now the focus should shift from who was just hired to who did the hiring.

Broncos Vice President/GM John Elway has earned every bit of acclaim he has received since he moved to Denver in 1983. He’s the best player in franchise history. He’s the biggest reason his Broncos teams played in six AFC title games and five Super Bowls, winning a pair of Lombardi Trophies.

As a member of the team’s front office, he’s the biggest reason Denver won the battle to sign future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning in 2012, which led to Denver winning Super Bowl 50.

Elway should have a lifetime appointment as vice president of the Broncos. He should no longer be the team's general manager.

Those who know him well acknowledge Elway’s large ego requires him to be the biggest dog in the room. He’s earned that status. But does the need for a John Elway statue in front of Broncos Stadium mean he should still be making all the decisions that impact the Broncos?

No. Just because the street outside the baseball stadium in Cincinnati is named Pete Rose Way does not mean Pete Rose should be running the Reds.

Aside from the successful Manning pursuit, Elway's performance as GM has been less than stellar. His draft busts (Paxton Lynch, Brock Osweiler, Sly Williams, Shane Ray) have been a regular topic of discussion. His free agent moves have been equal parts hit (Aqib Talib, Emmanuel Sanders, DeMarcus Ware) and miss (Russell Okung, Donald Stephenson, Mark Sanchez) and he let a contract dispute end the Broncos career of the best defensive coordinator in team history, Wade Phillips.

On the coaching front, Elway’s first head coaching hire was a successful, old-school head coach in John Fox, who replaced the unsuccessful, young Josh McDaniels. Does this formula sound familiar?

Fox led Denver to four AFC West titles in four years and Super Bowl XLVIII. He wasn’t the greatest coach in team history, but he was certainly more than competent.

Elway’s consistent meddling ultimately ruined what should have remained a productive working relationship during Manning’s best years as a Bronco. After Fox and his coaching staff bolted following a playoff loss in Indianapolis in 2014, Elway’s old friend and former backup QB Gary Kubiak landed in his lap. That coaching change turned out great for one year (winning Super Bowl 50) but Kubiak’s health concerns ended that run.

Anyone can whiff on a coaching hire, which Elway did with his decision to hire the painfully inexperienced and unqualified Vance Joseph to replace Kubiak. What should be most concerning about that hire is why Elway passed on Kyle Shanahan and picked Joseph. It wasn’t a purely football decision. Authority (ego?) was involved.

Elway could easily step back into a VP role and continue to be the face of the franchise. He could still have input. The Broncos' brain trust could do their due diligence and hire a smart, young GM like the Colts did with little-known Chris Ballard. All Ballard did in his first year in Indy was draft two rookies who earned first team All-Pro honors. Both those players were available when Denver drafted in those first two rounds.

Ballard also hired a new head coach, Frank Reich, who led the Colts from the bottom of the division to the AFC playoffs in one year.

It’s time for Elway to set his ego aside and learn to trust someone else to help make important decisions. Maybe even someone he hasn’t met. Maybe instead of looking for the next Peyton Manning, the Broncos should be looking for the next Chris Ballard.

Actually you still haven't convinced me he should change titles. Ego's are what makes the NFL go round and ego's are really, just the desire to win. But, I know Elway's ego isn't so large that he doesn't listen his associates. I've heard and read where coaches wanted players and Elway went and got'em. It's hard to say how many hours the FO spends on the draft and it's not unlike any other team. Is there a miracle formula and if there is, they must have a winning record every year. Fox needed to go and it was obvious after the blow out SB. The team was very poorly prepared and it showed horribly. If Ballard hit on 2 all pros in one draft then good for him. Does he have a miracle formula for draft. I say no. But did he get lucky. Darn tootin.

A GM has many duties. But at its core, a GM is about good drafting. Good drafts result in good cap management which results in good free agent signings. Bad drafting results in overpaying free agents and bad cap management.

The poor play of the 2017, 2018, and 2019 Broncos is simply the manifestation of a team which missed on most of its first and second round picks.
