We've signed Bortles as a temporary QB2 (actual QB3), who may never see the field and is likely to be waived as soon as Lock recovers.

Even if you believe Kap is a better player, and that the difference is more than marginal; how would signing Kap for the purpose we have signed Bortles have made any difference to the team?

Now if the question is whether we sign Bortles or Kap as a real QB2, that's a different story. But that isn't where we are.
Well IMO this is the question which could have been answered. If Jeff goes in there and performs badly having Kap (and I do believe he's better) could allow us to have a QB2 for a year or two. We will need a solid backup guy who can play when called upon.

    • Jeff Driskel came off the bench in Pittsburgh and did well. We'll see how he does. Guessing that Rypien will be active, since it may be too soon for Bortles to be ready.

I read something somewhere.. (such reliable sourcing ) that was the plan for this week because of the COVID rules.

Right. By the time Buhlahkay (Key & Peele pronunciation ) Bortles goes through all the Covid screening, physical, equipment, playbook, meetings, etc., it will be Sunday already. Denver will probably exercise one of Rypien's activations, if Bortles isn't ready. The next game after this Sunday is a week from today at the Jets. We'll see who the backup QB is by then.

But with Kaepernick also comes the hassle of "why isn't Kaepernick playing?" when Lock comes back and is given the starting job back. It's similar to the issues with the FB/TE who played QB for a year in Denver, the outside noise just isn't worth it.

And Kaepernick had issued with the Broncos that pretty much ensured Denver would never call him again.

            • I wonder if those who are trashing Bortles have really followed him for years to see his ups and downs, or are they just judging him one the end of his career. Not saying he is Peyton Manning level, but some of you guys sound like we are making him our starter. He is a freaking 3rd string QB, if we get to that point, we have bigger problems, and in that perspective, the situation is worse than Bortles.

It looks like Bortles has made it to practice today.

OK then. We'll see if two days practice results in game day activation. Rypien has probably run scout team O this week.

That FB/TE was the best QB on our roster. And the difference between going 4-12 and getting the number 2 pick and making the playoffs.

People were wondering why Tebow wasn't starting when it was clear that Orton was not getting the job done. It's like why we're wondering why Demar Dotson isn't playing while we see Wilkinson getting destroyed. Everybody wants the backup when the starter is blatantly awful.

He probably won’t be active but what are the chances the starter goes down 2 weeks in a row? Lol

If Bortles did come in they’d probably be drawing up plays in the dirt, it would make the offense unpredictable for sure

Watch it. Loose lips sink ships. :nono:

Yes, Fangio said it's too soon for Buhlahkay (Key & Peele pronunciation ) to be active, so Brett Rypien will be active.

                        • Kaepernick hasn't played in 5 years, he's probably full of rust.
He's pretty much a washed up has been.

                          • Still, no one can prove that Kaepernick wants to play football.

If he wanted to play, he would be in Seattle.

If he wanted to play, he would possibly be in Baltimore.

If he wanted to play, he would have shown up to the NFL arranged workout, instead of doing his own thing for a Nike promo. The teams that went along with his shananagans didn’t bother signing him.

Lol screw it they should just start Bortles, can’t gameplan against a offense that’s making the plays in the huddle

                              • Just a thought, but as we're discussing Bortles as a QB3 (emergency QB2); in exactly the same spot the Raiders have Mr. Nathan Peterman.
