As for Bolles, he did struggle in previous seasons and complaints about that were not limited to fans. Uncharacteristically, Elway called him out last year and so did Fangio. I think a lot of people have forgotten that.
      See:
His Broncos teammates and even his boss have had it with grabby left tackle Garett Bolles, who suggested officials are unfairly targeting him for holding infractions.

      and

This is one reason quite a few mocks and experts had us drafting a tackle in rounds one or two.

I think he's doing better for two reasons: first his resolve to be a better player which he announced at the beginning of the season. He's trying harder to improve, and I think some credit should be given for that. Secondly, the officiating has lightened up on offensive holding which has led to higher scoring (and more entertaining) games across the League and so he and other tackles can get away with more holding without drawing flags.

Two people offered articles about that in this thread:

      Bolles Misunderstood

Cushenberry is improving with each game which is all you can ask from a rookie starter. In his second year, Dalton Risner is having some problems, but those aren't as disturbing as Graham Glasgow's. He's supposed to be a veteran providing leadership, but he's been blown up a couple of times like the sack he gave up to #55, John Simon. Growing pains wouldn't apply to him or Risner, but developing unit cohesion might. They need to play together in order to achieve that.

You always take the franchise QB if it’s there... we should learn from 2 years ago when we took Chubb over Allen and Jax.
unless you think you have one then you don't draft one..

Also I feel you could say about any position is a 50/50 nature. The real thing with oline i think at ot. That 80% of them in the playoffs was drafted in the first round last year. I don't think we build a good oline with out drafting ots well.

I hope he continues to be a factor and a force. Poor guy took a lot of criticism, and still kept on ticking!

I disagree. He is still a below average OT, he just isn't having the holding penalties. People really have to stop using PFF to rank Olinemen, their stats are horrible. Even using those, saying he is the highest rated player out of a group of bad players doesn't make him good.

The Broncos Oline as a whole is bottom 3-5 in the league.

                EDIT:

just looked up some team stats on ESPN. Run blocking win rate: 66%, ranked 31st. pass blocking win rate: 45%, ranked 31st.

No idea how accurate or viable these stats are though.

I had to miss some of the game so I am not the right guy I suppose, but most of what I saw was Lock having pretty good protection and Lindsay rushing for 100 plus yards, against one of the better Ds in the league. I guess I am saying that, other than what I missed, I liked the "eye test".

Not so good after all, but I believe that if Lock stays healthy, we will see some improvement, just like we did with the O when he took over last year. He helps the Oline by throwing quickly thanks to his release capability, and with his athleticism. And if his passing game is where I think it can be, I expect a better run game as a result. I believe Olines need QBs to help out and vice versa. So many times you see Wilson, Mahomes, Jackson, Murray, and others turn nothing into something, which wears down Ds, and makes for better oline stats.

How exactly is Bolles still a below average OT?

how exactly isn't he is a better question.
What has he really improved at? Not much from what I can see. Still pretty bad at pass blocking and is marginal at run blocking.

let me guess...you are using PFF grades for your assumption of his big improvement?

Here you go, and these guys absolutely hammer Bolles at every chance.

Let’s do some analysis to compare 2019 Garett Bolles to 2020 Garett Bolles. The Denver Broncos might have a good left tackle this season.

No I’m not using PFF grades, he’s improved in a lot of areas. The article Butler linked sums it up very well.
