  • Adding fuel to the fire: Detailed Champ in 2003

I found the other thread on Champ's stats in 2003 entertaining and, since I'm killing time while dinner is in the oven, I thought I'd do a quick game-by-game statistical breakdown on Champ's season. I list the Redskins sacks for the game to help indicate pressure on the QB. Then I list the number of times the opposing team threw the ball. Finally, I list every mention of Bailey in the gamelog on a tackle after a reception. Plays in italics were tackles on running backs or tight ends who Champ probably wasn't covering.
[list=1][*]vs Jets. 'Skins had 1 sack. Jets threw 24 times.
    Q2-2:41 Conway 11yd, [email protected]:33 S.Moss 7yd, 3Q-8:30 Becht 1yd[*]@ Falcons. 'Skins had 3 sacks. Falcons threw 36 times.

By my count, he had only 3 pass interference calls all year with 2 of those against the Saints in a game where he only gave up 1 pass for 5 yards. It would seem that he was only involved in 1 passing touchdown and that was against a tight end (see Tampa Bay game). He also seemed to have several games where 1 or fewer catches by receivers were made against him. He did have a couple games that didn't look as good. Overall the stats look pretty good to me, especially considering how bad the 'Skins overall defense was. Where was their pass rush?

    Any thoughts on these stats?

Wow, man. Thanks for the effort!

He seems to be everything advertized, but I wonder how these stats compare to say Kelly Herndon's who he will be replacing. I really have to clue what is good

ONLY three (3) Pass Interference penalties?

          ONLY????

Sounds like a LOT to me!! I thought Bailey was better than THAT. Most good corners get maybe one all season.

For example, the ENTIRE Green Bay Packers defense ONLY had five (5). That's counting everyone!

Mike McKenzie had one (1) Pass Interference penalty, fourteen (14) passes defensed and four (4) picks.

Al Harris had four (4) Pass Interference penalties, eleven (11) passes defensed and three (3) picks. Harris is not very fast so when he gets beat he prevents the touchdown by grabbing the receiver.

Champ Bailey had (by your count) three (3) Pass Interference penalties, seven (7) passed defensed and two (2) picks.

Not sure what any of that proves other than 3 Pass Interference penalties is far from being a good thing. Certainly NOT an ONLY!!!

but if you actualy watch green bay's games then you can see that al harris commits pass interference on just about every other play its just not called by the refs for some reason i dont know. but everytime there's a green bay game on and i watch it he just gets me so p.o.ed

The reason it's NOT called is because it's NOT Pass Interference. However I do think that four (4) in one season is a lot.

i think three(3) [thats 3 as in one(1) two(2) three(3)] pass interference's for the year aint to bad. But its not a very important stat anyway...

3 in a season is not that bad-Especially when you are getting drubbed and on D all game long ieWashington. If I remember ONe bronco gave up 2 or 3 in a game

                        Obviously the pass interference call.

Like I said before, that's why Harris had so many. But making 3 or 4 coverage errors of that severity in one season is definately a problem.

That's not too surprising. The Broncos major weakness for the past few seasons has been poor pass coverage.

The number of times a player commits the most severely punished penalty (in terms of yards) in the game is not important.

                            Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!!!!

Keep racking up those 30+ yard penalties. They are NOT important!

                            Unreal!!!

yes pass interference is a big penalty, but i think 3 times a year is good.
