Well . . .
Last year, we were 13-3 with the DL we had. This year, however good it may or may not be, it would seem the DL has nonetheless improved over last year. Now, when you combine that with a more experienced and deeper secondary, a significantly deeper LB corps, with D.J. having a year under his belt at Sam, and a healthy Champ, I'd say we are looking pretty good, going into the season . . . at least better than last year.
IMHO.

I hate to agree with MTN_MAN, but I've basically given up expecting anything out of Courtney Brown. He's had 3 knee operations in the last 4 years. One of them was a serious operation to basically cut micro-grooves in the knee bone to cause it to bleed and generate more cartilage because he basically didn't have any. After you've had arthroscopic surgery for a few times it's down to bone-on-bone & that ain't good.
Well, Terrell Davis tried that kind of micro-surgery and it didn't work. His knees started out the last couple seasons o.k., but quickly flamed up in training camp, knocking him out. He couldn't take the pounding any more.
Brown isn't at that level yet, but it's not looking good. He's a very BIG man and to have knee inflamation and have to have arthroscopic surgery on his same left knee every year is NOT A GOOD THING.
I think if he lasts out this season it will be his last as a Bronco, maybe he'll be forced to retire, more likely he'll bounce around a bit and try to catch on here and there for a season or two more before he hangs it up.
But, it's blindingly clear that all the hype last season about Brown "finally reaching his potential, blah, blah, blah" is just that HYPE without any reality to it.
He's NEVER going to reach his potential because of injury.
Frankly, the Broncos should find a cheaper replacement who can take on blockers and stuff the run, because they're never going to get a BIT of a pass-rush from Courtney Brown. I'm predicting his sack totals will actually DECLINE from the overwhelming number of TWO last season.sigpic

To answer your question:
He played Right Defensive End the majority of his career in Cleveland. The Left Defensive End was Courtney Brown. However Lang did play at Left Defensive End in 2002, which was his first year in Cleveland, that also was the first time the Browns made the playoffs since returning to the league.
Mark Word, when he was with the Browns was a backup end. If memory serves right I believe he was backup Left Defensive End.Last edited by Charlie Brown; 08-25-2006, 02:24 PM.

Nothing, since he spends most of his time injured, and the rest of his time playing at 75% healthy (ie. always on the mend).
And "Big Money?" Well, he's "Big" alright, as in a BIG BUST (and I don't just mean his man boobs). It's beyond me where the front office thought this guy was worth what he was paid last year, let alone giving him more money this year.
If the D-line got no pressure from the front four last season, and these two Browncos were a part of that line, then why should we be surprised that new players are doing what they couldn't?
It's not just the scheme. It's the players. :brick:
These two should be shown the door... IMO
But as far as the other guys getting time, both Lang and Veal have impressed in preseason and even Nate Webster showed he can step in as a solid backup for Wilson."All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."sigpic

Last year, IMO, Warren at times was explosive with pressure up the middle. The scheme, again IMO, where he had to swallow up blockers took away from his play making ability. I think Warren is going to have a big year. Veal looks good to me as well, I'd like to see Warren and Veal starting, sit Myers.
Brown is the proverbial **** tease, pardon my french. He "flashes" that explosive athletic/power ability and gets us excited, but the injuries just seem to pile up with him. We should be gratefull that Lang is looking so good knowing how the Broncos rotate their D linemen.

Where I've been impressed with the play of Dumervil, Veal and even Lang in the pre-season, the Broncos still need to address the situation in the coming free agency or the 2007 Draft. There are some big names if I recall, that will be available on the market in 2007, and some great selections coming up in the Draft.
Who do I believe will be the final defensive lineman on the roster?
Courtney Brown
Gerard Warren
Michael Myers
Ebeneezer Ekuban
Kenard Lang
Antwon Burton
Demetrin Veal
John Engleberger
Elvis Dumervil
Not much to get excited about here. Where WA has pointed out Brown was our best lineman last year, Cugel's comments on him are money. I won't repeat them, but just read what Cugel had to say about Brown. I see his injuries as a big problem. He's always been injured.
Since the day Warren was given his big extension, I never believed he was worth it. There are a ton of defensive lineman who do his role, (which was plugging gaps last year) who do a better job and get considerably less money. That money would have been better spent keeping a guy like Reggie Hayward on this team.
I've never been excited about Myers or Ekuban, neither have many other teams which is why they've been journeyman lineman. They're both old, and they definitely need to be replaced. I think Dumervil can replace either of them. John Engleberger didn't do much last year, but after learning what we do here. . . I think he's an "okay" rotational guy. Not special, but an alright back up.
I'm most excited about Veal and Dumervil. Veal is only 25 years old and in his rotational role he put up 25 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. I think he could easily replace Myers, but I think on the depth chart he's slotted #2 behind Warren. Dumervil, is a good athlete, good motor and just makes plays. I look forward to seeing this kid have a great campaign. I haven't made an official prediction yet, but I think this is a good time to make it.
I expect Dumervil to have 5 sacks, 25 tackles and two forced fumbles. It may be a little much, but the kid has that kind of talent and I'm hoping the best for him.
This Antwon Burton kid must really excite the coaches, because all I ever heard from scouts and other draft geeks like myself was that he is very injury prone and didn't do much in college. Actually played Community College ball a while. Had a pretty nice senior campaign. This is what SI had to say about him, which echoes about anything I've heard about him in the past.
POSITIVES: Big space-eater in the middle of the line who effectively stuffs the run. Explosive, naturally strong and gets push up the field. Hard to move off the point and wraps up ball carriers on initial contact.
NEGATIVES: Lacks balance, is overweight and is constantly on the ground. Marginal pass-rushing skills. Injuries hampered him in the past.
Topscribe, you may be right that the Broncos did get to the AFC Championship game with this horrible of a line, but think of what we could do with just one proven pass rusher out of the bunch. It'd do wonders. Some say NFL games are won in the battle of the trenches, and I agree. We have a superstar cornerback, and two sophomores who played above expecations last year. Ferguson, no matter how much I dislike him -- played well last year too. Lynch, where old -- did very well last season. A better defensive line would help this guys out in pass defense a lot. Teams usually have way too much time to throw and it hangs our secondary out to dry. Our defense was still great last year, but with a pass-rusher or two on the line, we could be phenomenal. Wonder why the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars defenses are so good? It all starts up front man. All up front.Last edited by Dream; 08-26-2006, 09:00 AM.
