        Stats???

Paul is Tied for 30th in the league in Punting Average(40.9)

Net Average, the team is 27th(37.5)

Percentage of Punts inside the 20, Paul is 22nd(27.7%)

The team is tied for 10th in total # of punts(47), which averages out to a little over 5 per game.

That means Ernster is seeing more of the action, on average, than two-thirds of the punters in the league, and he is worse than 85% of them.

There is no doubt he is having a negative impact on this team, and it's only a matter of time before it costs us a game....

Before this last game he was in the middle of the pack(42.3)....Todd wasn't too much better(43.2). One bad game tends to screw up averages.

Punt average doesn't tell the whole story anyways.
BTW he is also close to the top of the league(About 4th) in return average. So his punts aren't getting returned like many of the other punters.

By average here we are talking average length hit (not net average).

            Ernester 2006 games 1-9: 47 punts 1920.1 yards total = 40.85 yrd ave
            I20: 13 total = 27.66%

Sauerbrun first 9 games last year...
            43 punts 1951.2 yards total = 45.38
            I20: 15 total = 34.88%

            Code:

            11/13	@OAK 4 44.3 52 1
When you consider 5 yards, that's quite a marked difference.

            2006:

The best average is Mat McBriar 37 punts @ 49.7 average.
The worst punter this year (in terms of average) is ....
DEN Paul Ernester 47 punts @ 40.9 yard average.

So I wouldn't say it's the "sky is falling" crowd, the plain and simple fact is...

We let go a punter with the 8th best average in the NFL (Sauerbrun 2005) for someone who now ranks last in average punt yard

Heh, I remember Matt McBriar. He got cut instead of Knorr because of his kickoff inexperience. I was rooting for him at the time...looks like we got the raw end of that deal.

In any case, Ernster is a big upgrade over Jason Baker and Micah Knorr. So to be honest I'm not complaining too much. He's had to kick in some nasty conditions such as in the Cleveland crosswind (trust me, kicking balls out of hand with a crosswind is a fine art). He'll come good, don't worry.

Knorr was bad, his I20 percentage was a woeful 22% in 2004 and his average was 41.5
                  2003 20.5% I20 and ave 43.2, which was actually a respectable 7th.

Right before the 4th game this year I made a thread about do we keep Paul or Todd. I was impressed with Paul at the time and figured we should give the kid the job. I don't hate Paul at all, but what concerns me is the home stretch now. We just have 7 more games (where did this season go?) and if he keeps playing like the last few weeks, it's going to eventually cost us a game. I agree kickoffs he's doing good at, but remember thats after we score. His punting is not that great and punting means we didn't score and with a crap punt places our defense in a bad spot. We can't afford that. I just want the best player we can have at any position because I remember how heart broken i was watching how close we got to the SB last year and watching that AFCCG. We need to do everything we can to place us back into that position. Just my thoughts is all.

Ernster's punts have little hangtime. I said it back when everyone was praising him in the early weeks and I'm saying it again - he's simply not as good a punter as Todd Sauerbraun was.

That fact is key to understanding this debate. Ernster kicks them Long & Low, not a good combo for punt coverage.

Loyal soldier, look at last year's avg starting field position for the Bronco's opponents and then compare them to this year's. That would be and interesting comparison.

You missed my point. Up untill this game the punting numbers were respectable for Ernster. Through the first 8 games Todd and Paul were rather close, but this last game dropped his stats. Now all of a sudden he is considered the worst punter in the league. Frankly it is nonsense.

Everyone also has to keep in mind that he is only a second year punter.

                            Well er... not really.

                            Not including the raiders game,
                            Ave 42.12 I20 = 30%
That's still fairly low in relation to the other punters around the NFL.

This is true, I'm not disagreeing with keeping Ernster just pointing out the facts.
I honestly feel if we keep Ernster he'll be great.
What I think was a mistake was cutting Todd, Ernster was given some tips by Todd during off-season and it worked. Why not help him all year?

Someone mentioned about job security - I don't think that's why Ernster's performance has taken a down turn. I think it's losing Todd's guidance (yeah - the drugs etc) and the pressure of being the only punter.

Here is something for people to look at....Todd's first year as a starter.

                              37.8 Avg
                              31.1 N-Avg

Another stat to look at is kickoffs.

                              Code:
G	KO	Avg	TB	Ret	Ret Avg
                              Sauerbrun 16	79	65.4	14	64	25.3
                              Ernster 9 38 68.6 13 25 25.0
Ernster already has almost as many TBs as Sauerbrun did and he did it in half the time.

Just give the kid a break. He had one bad game and he is still very young.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. I remember when we drafted him the scouts we're high on his leg strength.

I don't disklike Ernster, I just think cutting Todd was a bad move, especially for Ernster's development.
