Yes you can make the difference that one is soft and looks for reasons to sit out while the other had 3 horrible years prior to this year. But it won’t change the fact that you could be making a huge financial mistake by signing a high risk player to a long term deal. $13m would be a discount especially if he finishes as well as he is playing now(top LT according to PFF). He is turning 29 and is in line for basically one blockbuster contract. You think he’s going to only take $13m to stay with us when he has basically been boo’d and trashed by media and fans? Below are the top 4 LT yearly cost. While Bolles is not getting $22m per year he will be getting around $16m if he hits FA (assuming he continues to play well and stays healthy). So if you’re going to be paying him $16m anyways, why not protect yourself and place the FT for around the same cost? Makes no sense why people want to dive into a long term contract with Bolles so quickly.

    Laremy Tunsil $22,000,000
    Anthony Castonzo $16,500,000
    Taylor Lewan$16,000,000
    Nate Solder$15,500,000

Solder is the one player listed here that is clearly overpaid. And, a hug reason why I want to sign Bolles now. I don't want him to get to free agency and we get into a bidding war. If he's willing to take a hometown discount, wouldn't that be better than us getting screwed by another Solder type scenario?

Who cares what the reasons are for his uptick in play, that's a good thing!! I would rather sign Bolles and continue continuity on our line then continue to play musical chairs. We need our RT position fixed way more than the LT...imo

I think the only way the Broncos should sign Bolles to a multi year deal is if it’s one that easy to get out of.

It needs to have no signing bonus and be guaranteed year to year.

Let’s not forget that the referees seem to have forgotten what holding is this season. What happens if they remember next year?

Oh they certainly will remember. This season is the outlier because of COVID. The refs were told to alter they way they cal holding penalties because of the lack of trainig camp and preseason games. Bolles will be back to his 10 holding calls per game form next season

Yeah, I thought this was at least a partial factor behind his alleged improvement but the truth is he actually has improved! The guys at MHR (who previously hammered on Bolles for bad technique) examined his play closely and it's significantly better, and that's the tale of the tape. See:

Let’s do some analysis to compare 2019 Garett Bolles to 2020 Garett Bolles. The Denver Broncos might have a good left tackle this season.

If it is structured with incentives, then I'm all for it.

If you’re Bolles why in the world would you sign an extension now? Why would he also take a hometown discount? Makes zero sense why he would. He’s turning 29 and will get one big contract with the way he’s playing. Why would he take a hometown discount to a city that’s been trying to run him out for 3 years? Bolles agent is not going to let him sign a discount with the way he is playing right now.

Is that really a good strategy to follow though?

The negotiating tactics and decisions on multiple players leaves a lot be desired IMO. Elway plays hard ball with some players but will the happily overpay for others ( ex: James, Jackson , Gordon)
At times it is downright odd where he picks his battles.

Look no further then the QB and RT fiascos in the last 5 years.

It will be interesting to see how this all works out. Given recent history...most likely with Bolles signing somewhere else for “too much” and the Broncos trying to fill the void left. At least we can look forward to James returning. Yeah!

What a waste of a signing making him one of the highest paid RTs in the game while we bicker about paying a guy who has not missed a game in his career and only seems to keep improving. Brilliant!

Source: Ravens LT Ronnie Stanley's new five-year extension is worth $98.75 million in new money. APY is $19.75 million with $1.25 million in Pro Bowl incentives that can take the deal to $100 million (or $20 million per).

Total guarantees, including this year's: $68.57 million.

                        Bolles agent is prob thrilled.

If you can make it in The NFL as a starting LT, you will make a lot of money. This position is coveted, especially when you consider drafts, and how protecting your QB (usually a right handed thrower) becomes pretty essential stuff when the smoke clears, and the pick is ready. Bolles, who has been much maligned, has survived thus far, and is improving. He deserves a good contract. Not saying a whopper of a deal. But given his gained experience, some team will want to sign him if we don't.

                            that's a very valid point.

I think he knows his market isn't going to be that hot and it's immediate security. Get paid now, not that bad of a concept. He could chance free agency but thanks to Solder most if not all teams will be gun shy on him.

That’s your guess. That you don’t think his market won’t be that high. Yet, FA over the last 10 years has shown that teams will pay even average players top dollars. Especially at a premium position. He will be getting $16+m this offseason from someone. I just hope it’s not us unless it’s a FT
