He was drafted to be Fangios’ “Khalil Mack” who is the same size and plays OLB. Chubb is just a bust. No way around that.
yes, Khalil Mack and Chubb are the nearly the same size and weight.
Mack was a linebacker in college. Chubb was a DE. Chubb is also bigger.

    Chubb should be a DE.

A lot of teams run the nickel package nowadays.

Chubb was 269 coming out of college, Chubb is exactly where he’s supposed to be. Denver, rightfully so, plays a 3-4 defense. Chubb is about 20 pounds too small to play DE in a 3-4.
3-4 DEs need to be in the 295-310 weight range to play DE in the 3-4.
Denver isn’t going to switch to a 4-3 just for Chubb.

          Chubb is listed at 275.

I never suggested they should switch for him.

All I said is he needs to be DE. He’s at the right size for a 4-3 front. He’s playing out of position. He needs to go to another team that plays the way he needs to play. Either that, or stay in Denver, if there’s a new coaching staff that switches to a 4-3.

He probably will have to go to another team. I don’t see Denver switching back to 4-3. Either way, if you can’t rush the passer as a OLB, I doubt you will be able to as a DE.

Sure. Odd fronts sub a DB in for a 0 tech, and split fronts sub a DB in for a Backer. So, Nickel package ends up as a split front regardless of how it started.

When Denver wants to defend the run, they line up in their odd front. Most odd fronts play edge control/funnel run D. Used to be conventional wisdom not to try too many outside run attempts against a 50/3-4 D because of that. Chubb can do a good job funneling runs to the middle when he's OLB in an odd front. He can be walked or line up at 5/9.

When Denver takes out the 0 tech (Purcell/Williams) to put in a fifth DB, the D becomes a split front with the OLBs playing DE in a 4-2-5 look. If Chubb is in, he's playing DE in a split front as a 5/9.

If Denver goes Dime , they take out one of the two ILBs for the sixth DB. The DTs are usually lined up in 2/3 tech which leaves the middle open to a run. Brandon Staley learned from Vic Fangio and that look cost him a 9 yard rushing TD at 12:50 of the 2nd quarter.

One wonders if NFL odd fronts that become split fronts in nickel/dime switch from edge control/funnel run D to gap control/spill.
