  • Pat Shurmur was awful today

Both RBs managed over 6 yards per carry today, yet we ran the ball 17 times compared to throwing it 37 times.

Shurmur absolutely sucked today and put our offense in horrible spots all afternoon. Sam Martin got a workout because Pat refused to call a balanced game, despite the success we had running the football.

You’re missing 2 of your top 3 WRs and your starting QB misses the second half and that’s how you call the game? Inexcusable.

Today’s loss wasn’t on Teddy or Lock or the defense. It was 100%, squarely in the shoulders of our offensive coordinator. He needs to be better or we’re in for a long season.

When the running game had early success, Teddy was off some and the pass protection was not working a good OC would have started calling run plays until the pass protection and QB adapted.

Shurmur has never looked like a good OC in Denver. The deeper I dive into his career the more I wonder why he has a job.

I wondered how he would handle being down a score. The run should not have been abandoned as early as it did. But the passing game wasn’t there either

Drove me nuts when we got the ball back with like 10 minutes left to go and we didnt run the ball. I can understand if there was 4 or 5 minutes left in the game but 10-11 minutes will all time outs is a lifetime. Also, guys can go out of bounds

not sure why we didnt run it 25+ times and do short passes with fant or albert O. do really long drives and wear their D out at altitude

          ?

In the first half Gordon and Williams had 6.5 and 6.3 yards per carry, 6 touches each. As soon as Baltimore went up a score Shurmur abandoned the run.

We could have had their defense gassed by the third quarter.

I know one running play offense got 10 yards and basically when pass, pass, pass the next set of downs. Like...WHY!? Especially when it was working and even more so when Teddy went out. They run the ball 25-30 times they could easily get a 100 yds or close to it every game. The backfield is way better than the utilitization indicates.

I remember Scangarello struggled early in Denver however, he had the offense going pretty well during the last 4-5 games. He was learning on the job but he wasn’t stuck in his ways. Fangio scapegoated Scangarello. There was no excuse for Shurmur abandoning the run like he did today.

This game was bad from top to bottom. Offensive play calling was embarrassingly bad. Defensive conservative scheme was horrible. Neither coach adjusted. At all.

Player execution was also bad. Except for the following who caught my eye: Simmons, both RBs, and Caden Sterns (nice).

All that said, I'm chalking it up as one game, for now. On this coaching staff, I've wobbled between meh to very strong dislike. I'm really looking forward to next week. It might say everything about this team.

This team goes no where until ownership and coaching staff is turned. I really like Paton but inherenting Fangio and Shurmer in win now mode is just ridiculous. Need to clean house, including Elway and recalibrate your rebuild

I asked that same thing last year when I started a Fire Pat Thread.

As bad as Shurmur was, Fangio was dismal as well. Clock management was terrible and this wasn’t the first time. He either isn’t skilled enough to help Shurmur or lacks the courage to intervene, maybe both.

Are you talking about the time out people want Vic to call near end of 1st half? Because all that happened is Shurmur called 3 passes that were incomplete and we gave the ball back to the Ravens. Calling a time out would have just made it easier for them to score. Call a time out maybe they get a TD instead of FG.

Hard to play smart ball when the offense has decided to call it a day.

It did feel like Shurmur set up Lock and the offense to fail in the second half. Now hitting a couple of pass plays that should have been completed would have given us more options. It sort of feels like the offense can't concentrate and execute with Lock as QB. If Shurmur cares at all about winning with Lock as QB we have to run the ball and we kind of have to be stubborn about it. Especially if we getting blitzed seven ways to Sunday and our linemen have proven they can move people of the LOS. Off topic. Phenomenal effort by Javonte Williams at times today and Gordon ran well also.

Long live Shurm and his 3-wides! Gotta love his commitment or arrogance...or stupidity or whatever it is that keeps him from actually adapting to the resources he has at his disposal.

I like me some Teddy B, so I hate to have a crap season on his resume, but I love my Broncos more and for this team to even start to redirect, refocus, the coaching staff needs to be blown out. We need games like this to further solidify the decision that this staff gets blown out in the offseason. I already feel they will, that Paton is doing his best with the crap sandwich he was served coming into this organization. But I need assurances this will happen.
