In 2022 Denver won five games and lost another five by a total of eleven points (i.e., an average of 2.2 ppg) Believe there were also one score losses, too.
The problem was poor coaching for O & STs. They weren't and aren't that far off. There are plenty of offensive weapons and the O-Line is being upgraded. The coaching staff is a mix of experience and youth and enthusiasm with clear leadership.
I'm excited."Stultum est timere quod vitare non potes." ~ Publilius Syrus👍 7Comment

I think there have been few Qbs in the history of the NFL that could have looked successful with the 2022 Bronco offense. It essentially would have taken a QB who can take control and ignore what the coaches wanted.👍 2Comment

Calling what Hackett & Co. put on the field in 2022 a football offense stretches what "football offense" means at any level. Schlereth described it as "calling plays for the sake of calling plays hoping something would work.""Stultum est timere quod vitare non potes." ~ Publilius Syrus👍 1Comment

Oh I am not saying Russel Wilson's play wasn't "offensive" a lot of the time because it definitely was. I believe Sean Payton will put Russel Wilson in an offense he can be successful and thrive in. Russel Wilson still has to execute it on a high level if Denver is going to be a winning football team again.Comment

Wilson still needs to make pre snap reads, still needs to assess correctly, still needs to make the correct throws. Can he?
I understand the speculation of the season plan is to rush the ball effectively and throw the ball off that success. We shall see how well Wilson makes those decisions and throws as his own ability to escape the pass rush and be an effective runner diminishes. Will defenses respect his running ability? They didn’t seem to last season.
Payton has a difficult job in designing a workable offense around Wilson. At some point the accountability has to rest on Wilson. Broncos did not give up all the assets and salary for a mediocre game manager. Wilson was brought in to make big boy elite QB plays.
Still no certainty he can. Going to be an interesting season seeing him prove he still can.
Honestly, my evaluation of Payton begins with this management of Wilson. But my next evaluation of the “Payton Effect” has to be on if his influence brings in any of the next round of vet free agents as the pre-season cuts start. Broncos have limited money to spend. Will any impact vets sign because of what they see from the team when they have multiple choices?Last edited by FR Tim; 05-31-2023, 06:52 AM.Comment

It will be interesting indeed to see how SP designs the offense.
I still maintain that last year's debacle was multi-faceted and was a culmination of failures on many levels: players, coaches, culture, scheme, lack of discipline, lack of accountability, horrible offensive design, mass confusion. All of it was bad. Bottom line is the HC is in charge of keeping it all together and Hackett allowed the inmates to run the asylum. It was a massive failure on every level, so he had to go. I'm happy to have SP now and I believe he has what it takes to keep the kittens in the basket.
As far as RW, he had an awful season. He made poor decisions and looked inept a lot of the time. There is so much speculation about the reasons for this that it turns into crazy conspiracy theories. Still, there were times RW looked good and there were times that he looked really good - unfortunately, those times were dwarfed by long stretches of poor play.
I personally think SP will design a proper offense that will highlight player's strengths - that goes for everyone, including RW. I expect a heavy angle blocking running scheme with timely PAP and deep shots. We shall see how it turns out, but at least we have a competent HC.👍 1Comment

Am guessing we'll see a strong rushing attack with plenty of PAP, but think the calls will be over 50% pass, maybe close to 55%. Will not be surprised to see c. 600 pass attempts in 2023. SP knows what he's doing and also knew that by taking this job, he'd have RW as his QB."Stultum est timere quod vitare non potes." ~ Publilius SyrusComment

Free agent signings on the offensive side of the ball (i.e., McGlinchey, Powers, Burton, Manhertz, Perine, Jones) indicate a commitment to a rushing attack which will probably include a high percentage of angle blocked plays. The companion to a viable rushing attack is a deep passing attack. The first guy picked in the draft is WR who can provide a deep target. In New Orleans, SP ran his version of Air Coryell aka Vertical. During his Seattle seasons, RW was known for his deep ball.

From what SP has been saying since Super Bowl week RW was trying hard to get SP knowing exactly the type of coach he is. There is no reporting on what RW was telling the Broncos but apparently Brees and RW live in same neighborhood and RW was asking Brees constantly when is SP coming to Denver."Stultum est timere quod vitare non potes." ~ Publilius SyrusComment

What similarities of the two QBs are you thinking?
I see two entirely different players. One that was more of a pocket passer that rarely was a running threat. He processed defenses and routes with great accuracy. Including quick slants, utilized RB and middle third patterns.
The other was at his best as a rushing threat that defenses needed to respect. A QB that relied on a power running game to set up PAP long throws or his mobility to extend plays. Not really a timing, pure passer.
The biggest question is can Payton get one to play more like the other late in his career. Not his natural instincts or “comfort zone” during a game. Last year that led to indecision. On what he was seeing and where he needed to deliver the ball. Payton has a tough job.
Maybe I am being too critical. Curious to see the comments of how Brees and Wilson skill sets overlap enough that Payton can get the best out of Wilson at 35 yrs old?👍 1Comment
