  • Broncos RBs in 2023

Another thread had some good RB discussion. Obviously Javonte coming off injury. We got a free agent I am excited about. Some say we got a couple of the better UDFA RBs

One of my early wish list targets was Kareem Hunt. Not sure if we have the cap for that.
When you want to feel negative about the Broncos think of this. Detroit Lions have 1 playoff win in the Super Bowl era in 1992 (1991 season). They are 0-3 in the playoffs since 2000.

I am not feeling comfortable with the current RB situation either.

Williams is an unknown. “ If healthy” is a big risk. I would prefer they give him time for full recovery and rehab. Rushing him back is a bad long term decision IMO. Put him on PUP list for first half of the season to let him work on being 100% with less chance of setbacks. Ideally he can be a midseason addition as other RBs inevitably get dinged up.

Perine is a great addition. Just not as a solid starter carrying the load ? Uncertain of all the others, four RBs on the roster, a couple of UDFAs that are intriguing. But are any impact players? I would love to think the coaches can make them better then they have shown or is expected. But not sure I rely on any being break out impact players to start the season.

The discussion of Hunt makes me feel dirty due to his past behavior. But I understand some just don’t care. Kenyon Drake could be an interesting pick up on an inexpensive contract.

I would loved to see a drafted RB. Now I would like to see a solid contributor added. In reality they just might not have the luxury of adding a RB due to cap limitations. Just have to make do with what they have in the building.

There are several holes in the roster. How Paton fills them will be interesting. I am hoping a couple high caliber vets are released and find their way to Denver. Still remains to be seen if the Payton/ Wilson combo inspires any vets. Or is it just role player type guys we have already added like Burton, Trautman, Jones and Callaway? We will see.

As of today, most if not all of Denver's pre-draft roster has been running and lifting for a month with no media distractions. The new coaching staff has learned about the physical condition and demeanor of the team. That will provide valuable information on which to base decisions about areas of greatest need on the roster. The May/June camps will round that out. Rookie camp/tryouts this weekend could lead to some additional roster movement.

As far as RBs are concerned, there are six (Badie, Crockett, Jones, McAllister, Perine and Williams) plus two UDFAs (McLaughlin and Wilson) and an XFL guy coming in for tryouts tomorrow (Jaques Patrick)

Denver entered the draft with 72 and came out with 78 guys. Sounds like they signed 17 UDFAs which means they need to release five guys to get to 90. They started that process yesterday by releasing Jake Martin. More cuts may be announced today/tomorrow which could include a RB if, for example, they decide to add Jacques Patrick. Releasing Martin provides c. $11 million cap space which could be used to sign a FA.

Denver's RBs seem to be either big, inside, power guys (Williams, Perine, Jones, Crockett, Wilson, Patrick) or smaller speed guys (Badie, McAllister, McLaughlin) Between now and the end of TC/preseason more players of interest at most positions will become available. The roster is always a work in progress including movement to and from the PS in-season.

Should we trade Sutton to Minnesota for Cook?

In reading this article, we are projected to have the easiest schedule for RBs. You can interpret this one if two ways…

One way being we need to build a solid running back room that can take advantage of our matchups, while Williams recovers and help our offense finally take a leap forward we have all been desperately needing. Sign a free agent RB like Hunt or Fournette and spend some money.

Another outlook is that we do not need to overreact at the RB position and be patient with Williams recovery, while feeling comfortable that Perine and company are fully capable of carrying a balanced load this season. We could use another body or two at this position going into camp, but do not need to spend higher dollars on a 1-2 year player. Use those dollars somewhere else.

I am in the camp of exploiting our matchups as much as possible and score points! I do not know if, when and how Williams will come back from his injury and if it means we sign Hunt or Fournette then I am all for it. However, I have a feeling Perine is going to become a fan favorite after a few games.

I have herd multiple sources I trust say one of SPs strengths is to game plan an offense to make RBs look amazing

One way to think of that is SP can probably make an average RB look good

Another way to look at it is he can make the Broncos offense really hard to defend with superior talented RBs.

We have done a good job filling holes so far imo considering how many we had at end of last season. I get there was a lot of work.

I also think Bronco fans in the last 25 years have seen first hand the difference between superior RBs and average RBs. How a superior RB can push the offense to the next level even when other parts of the team may still need work.

It is still to be determined if Payton can scheme our current RBs to be similar to Kamara and Ingram. Perhaps more specifically elevating a RB like Pierre Thomas. Or Wilson to put up Brees like stats.

I am certainly hoping he can. That is the point of paying so much in picks and salary for our current Payton/ Wilson combo.

Win or it was a waste.

There are certainly more additions coming. It will be interesting to see how they prioritize positions and specific players when they make the next phase of moves.

The acquisitions of McGlinchey, Powers, Burton, Manhertz, Trautman, Perine and Jones seem to indicate a rushing attack which will be predominantly angle blocked. Angle blocked run plays offer more variety in play action looks than zone steps.

The natural complement of a robust rushing attack is a deep passing attack. In New Orleans, Sean Payton ran his version of Air Coryell which some call Vertical. That is supported by the drafting of Marvin Mims with Denver's first pick. Coryell's system reads deep, then intermediate, then short.

It may turn out that SP's O will seem pass heavy, but with a good chunk of the calls play action. My personal preference is for closer to 50/50 calls. We shall see.

Game planning/scheming a rushing attack is based on how to block each play against each expected defensive alignment. Indications are for a predominantly angle blocked rushing attack. It wants to outnumber the D at POA using down blocks and pullers.

Game plan can identify what spot(s) to attack the D. An offensive run game needs a bread and butter play they like. The best rushing attacks are series-based and want to force D to adjust, so that the adjustments can be attacked.

Angle blocking facilitates misdirection like Counter, power plays like Whams and Traps as well as influence. Dave Magazu was a master of influence. A look back at the 2011 season will show that.

Honestly I will believe it when I see it. I am tempering my enthusiasm until he is actually consistently carrying the ball 20 times a game and looks like the pre- injury Williams we all love.

Payton actually used the word “ hopeful” in his comments. They don’t know if Williams can start the season healthy. Or more importantly stay that way once he starts actively participating in contact or games.

From everything we have read, it was a major injury of multiple ligaments. Will he be one of the anomalies that recovery fully on an accelerated timeline? Or more in the norm of taking more months and additional setbacks to be at his previous performance levels? The worst thing they can do is rush him back into action and he becomes a hobbled RB in and out of games all season.

Wishing him nothing but success and good health. I will be thrilled to see him impacting games when he is ready.

It will be a committee sharing up to c.25 rushing attempts per game.

How many touches do you think the RBs will get?

Maybe 25 rushing attempts but I am guessing 5-10 pass catches a game as well.
