  • SP's Joker

My after work news started with Joker and just got done with more Joker (RAWR!)

Saw this video of SP talking about the Joker in his offense. Anyone know what that is?

    Starts at 7:35

Unofficial Adopt a Bronco in 2023 is Russell Wilson. He getting a lot of hate from "Bronco Fans". I am going to support him. He is our Qb1 for 2023,

When you're playing a card game, every card has a value. Everyone knows the value of each card and how that card fits into the rules of the game. This is what you base your strategy on. Some games use a Joker card which can be considered 'wild' because the value of the card can change depending on the whim of the player using it, and this uncertainty may affect play in ways that opponents can't or won't predict. An NFL player on Offense who can do things that other players can't do brings a similar pressure to opposing Defenses because normal strategies may not work against them. Payton is talking about how he can use players like that to beat opposing Defenses on game day.

Lets not get too tricky....just beat the man in front of you. I prefer that mentality.

Then Dulcich has no place on this team. Trade him. He was a wasted draft pick.

Despite providing promising bursts in his rookie campaign, Greg Dulcich's first NFL season was ultimately derailed by injuries and overall offensive struggles for the Denver Broncos.

None of the Dulcich optimism has dimmed in the infant days of the Sean Payton era, though.

Following Thursday's organized team activities, Payton had surely glimpsed Dulcich's potential and very much liked what he saw.

"I've been lucky enough to -- I've had [former New Orleans Saints tight end Jeremy] Shockey, [former Dallas Cowboys TE Jason] Witten, [former Saints TE] Jimmy Graham, and I'm probably leaving out a few guys," Payton said, via team transcript. "I'm not saying this young player [will be just like them], but he's got traits that are exciting and today was one of those days where you begin to have a vision."

Payton's vision for Dulcich could potentially be beyond just playing tight end and taking on the "joker" position.

"The 'joker' player for us is not a receiver," Payton explained. "It's either a running back or a tight end with exceptional ball skills and then you can work matchups. We've had that at the running back [position]. [Former Saints RB] Reggie Bush was the 'Joker,' [former Saints RB] Darren Sproles and [Saints RB] Alvin Kamara. Those were all unique players, not just in the running game, but they had passing game skill sets that allowed you to do multiple things, and I think Greg does, too."

From Payton’s comments above, it doesn’t look like he agrees with your opinion.

Perhaps the young man has some value after all.

I think Dulcich is that kind of talent. Sure. I can see it. He impressed me last year.

                You're misinterpreting what I'm posting.

It’s all good. If I misinterpreted the subtleties I apologize for butting in.

Just seemed like a straightforward comment. I missed your humor or nuance apparently.

In April, when the lifting and running began, there was mention of using Dulcich as a Move/off-LOS type of TE/H-Back instead of a Y/in-line TE on LOS. Since his strength is receiving, that makes sense as he could motion, changing the strength of the formation and line up pretty much anywhere in the backfield/off LOS. He could also augment blocking schemes at Fullback depth or as a Wing.

The free agent TEs signed (Manhertz, Hudson) and the draft day trade (Trautman) seem like Y types. Payton seems to want reliable blockers to line up at Y. Dulcich does not seem like that kind of player, but his receiving skills can be employed off LOS.

Do you think he'd improve as a blocker given a moving start from behind the LOS and a clear set of objectives? Not saying that he's horrible at it - just that it hasn't been a strength.

Dulcich will be coached well, so he will probably improve since he has plenty of room for it.

There is a significant difference between blocking from a three-point stance on LOS to coming out of a three-point stance at Fullback depth and taking a course to an area or man assignment while staying low, to coming out of a three-point stance from Wing or blocking coming out of motion.

With several different types of blocking assignments it's expected that a player might be better at one than the others. Some blocks require heavy contact with some movement, like kick out. Others just require getting between the defender and the ball carrier, like seal.

Some blocks require pinpoint timing like a motion man blocking right after he passes the QB taking the snap.

There will be no contact until the pads and hats go on in TC, so we''ll just need to wait until the preseason games to see how the non O-Line offensive players are doing with their blocking.

Is/was New Orleans Saints Taysom Hill (gone?) a joker"?

Not from what I gather although I didn't follow him closely. From what I can tell he's more of a utility player.
