Lyle was one of my favorite Broncos but unfortunately at the time we apparently couldn't afford to keep him. Toward the end of his life he was ravaged by brain cancer which was brought on by steroid use. Sad story as back then they did not know how bad steroid use was and these guys ate them like candy.

A big reason we traded Alzado, if I remember correctly, was that he "retired" to become a boxer. Then he fought Ali in the exhibition fight and did so poorly that he decided to "unretire". The Broncos were upset with him for retiring so they traded him to the Browns. Alzado claimed the Broncos promised not to trade him if he came back and held a grudge against the Broncos after that.

In a bit of irony, we traded Alzado for a second round pick which we used to draft Rulon Jones, who became his replacement and had a pretty good career of his own as a Bronco.

Since no one answered, Rulon Jones' nickname was "Too Tough" He did not like the nick name because he considers himself to be a quite, gentle man. He says that his per sauna was that he had to play "Too Tough" when he was on the field but that was not how he was off the field and did not want to be considered a dirty player.

Rulon Jones had an incident at Utah State where he assaulted someone with a tire iron. This caused him to fall in the draft so we got him in the second round. He wouldn't talk about the incident other than to say he was in a daze when it happened. Because of this incident in college his nickname was "Too Mean", which he hated.
