                              MAY 2, 1983 - In the biggest trade in franchise history, Denver acquires quarterback John Elway, the first player taken in the NFL draft, and signs him to a five-year contract. In exchange for Elway, the Baltimore Colts received Chris Hinton, the offensive guard from Northwestern who was the Broncos' first pick in the draft and the fourth player taken over all; Mark Herrmann, a quarterback from Purdue who has played three seasons with the Broncos; and the Broncos' first-round draft choice in 1984.
