  • Chris Myers to start at LG

    Hamilton's situation makes Myers starter
Promotion could carry into season opener at Buffalo

Until further notice, Chris Myers is the Broncos' starting left guard. Postconcussion symptoms have yet to clear from Ben Hamilton, which means he is questionable for the season opener Sept. 9 at Buffalo.

Hamilton started all 80 regular-season games the previous five seasons, but has missed the entire preseason after suffering a concussion early in training camp. He was expected to return Monday and play Thursday in the preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals at Invesco Field at Mile High, but recent cardio-fitness workouts left him feeling nauseous.

The Broncos will have Hamilton evaluated by a neurospecialist Wednesday. His agent, Peter Schaffer, is optimistic Hamilton will be ready by next week.

"The Broncos are taking great precaution in their approach to treating Ben," Schaffer said. "We have full confidence in their medical staff, which has been doing what's best for his personal and the team's well being, and we remain confident he will be ready to go for the opener."

If Hamilton isn't cleared by Monday, Myers will get the first start of his three-year career.

Myers was selected in the sixth round of the 2005 draft out of Miami.

I tell you I love Elway! He was my hero growing up. I loved the way he threw the ball with velocity! I love that in a QB. This is why I am a Cutlerfan!!

Well it should certainly be interesting if he starts.
Hamilton is a great guard, so he will be missed, but I think Myers will be okay. Hes been with the broncos for a while now and knows the system well.
Perhaps a little bit of starting experience will be good for him in the long run.

It's nothing against Myers but I really want Hamilton back. The right side of our line is brand new and I was counting on the left side returning strong this year.

More importantly, I hope Hamilton gets well just because those concussions can be scary. His long-term health, regardless of football, should be his top priority.

        Get well, Ben!

I agree with you. Chris has started three preseason games and perhaps some may think I am wrong I feel he has improved each game. Against the Browns I think Chris had his best game since he has been with the Broncos. This is his chance to shine and he knows he has big shoes to fill.

I'm really liking that Holland/Pears combo on the right side, Jav.

And I'm not the biggest Ben Hamilton fan but hopefully his situation isn't as bad as it sounds.

I hope you're right... I know this is the moment you guys have been waiting for-- so congratulations to both of you, I wish Chris all the best.

That being said, the grace period won't last long -- we need productivity out of the big guy. I know he's had great potential coming out of The U and has just been waiting to get a chance to show what he's got-- now let's see that translate into helping us get a W.

Thanks Buff.....Yes its a moment we been waiting for and we sure are not happy it came from Bens injury. I am very sure he is ready to step up and prove he can handle the job. In all of Chris's years playing football I have never seen him owned by any defensive lineman in a game. He has always Dominate his opponet overall. Just like everyone else in the game some plays are not as good as you would wish but no one has a perfect game. Blocks are missed by everyone on the line at some point. Even the long time vets. Hope everyone keeps that in mind when judging his play.

That being said, Chris was talking to me last night about Bens injury and I just hope he recovers quickly from it. As much as I love to see my son get his first start we really do hope for Bens return. I play international rugby and have been since 1974. I have had my share of bad concussions and I know what he is going through. Hope everyone is saying a few prayers for Ben.

Wow, Chris' dad is on here? For a while now? HI!

I think we'll be alright guys, I'm pretty sure we'll hold our own against the Bills without Ben, after all he probably won't be out past week one based on what were hearing about his progress.

But I think it's great everyone is remembering that he's a real GUY not just "some player". But like I said, sounds like his progress is good. You know these NFL guys, if you ask them, it's more about working through the injury to get back on the field than anything else.

The NFL is taking the whole traumatic brain injury thing pretty seriously. I think as a whole, our society is starting to understand this more and more too which trickles into management's decision (via recommendations from the doctors).

Truth is if you get a concussion before you have healed the last one, it can start to lead to accumulating effects. Post-concussive syndrome can last for (usually) weeks but in some cases can even linger for months. Its definitely good that they are being cautious with Ben, and I'm sure they won't put him in there until they are sure he's better.

Now, if you read the Montrae Holland piece this morning, there is another aspect to this. If Myers plays well, he might not relinquish the starting spot. I think if there is good chemistry from the o-line during the Buffalo game, Ben may find that his ship has sailed, at least for now.

Congrats to Chris and his Dad! By the way, 62 - do you STILL play rugby? And you've been playing since '74? Thats pretty tough! Perhaps you should suit up for the orange and blue!!!

                        Wally Pip comes to mind...
I didn't get to see any games yet this year so I can't get a feel for Chris' play, but it is one of the main things I watch [O-line play]. Personally I hope Chris all the best and that he flourishes. I am one of those old stodgey farts that wasn't really satisfied with the past O-Line play, so I am quite happy to see all of these changes. I hope - truly hope - Chris is the answer at LG.

                        Congrats Mr. Myers(s).

Sad news to see that Hamilton still hasn't recovered, hes been one of my favorite players for a while now, I really don't know much about meyers, does he have the speed that Hamilton did?

I gotta tell you Chris and our family are really pulling for Bens recovery even though Chris has the start in his place. We are in no way happy this happened to Ben. Yes I been playing rugby since 74 and I get in a few games a year now but since I am the youngest on the team......hard to get the guys together anymore. We have scattered around the country.
I had my fair share of concussions ( maybe that explains the 70s flashbacks also LOL ) and I just hope and pray that his recovery is quick and all the professionals involved are sure his injury wont cause other damage. Head injurys just scare me to death after all my years of rugby I have seen some pretty nasty head injuries. Ben and Tom took Chris under their wing when he got drafted and he feels like they are his brothers. You can bet Chris is the first to wish his return. He really is.
