Paige: With Kyle Orton at QB, Broncos have only a ghost of a chance

Veteran quarterback Kyle Orton airs it out during the first quarter of the Broncos' season opener Monday night against the Oakland Raiders at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. (Joe Amon, The Denver Post)
Perhaps Kyle Orton should change his name to Casper Tulowitzki.
When the home crowd boos at every home game he can think it's because he's "The Friendly Ghost," and when the Broncos "fans" chant "Tee-Bow," he can believe they're saying "Tu-Lo."
Of course, unlike the stadium, Orton won't change his name over adverse reactions. As he stated Aug. 8: "Thank God the people don't make the decisions. That's really all I got to say about it."
But that wasn't all, because Orton added that his "last goal is to win over the fans."
On Monday night, Orton didn't accomplish his last goal, or many others, except, probably, for passing for more than 275 yards. The Broncos now are 4-9 when Orton throws for more than 275 yards.
During training camp, Orton told a local radio station that the last two seasons were the best of his career, and also said to reporters, "I'm playing the best football of my career." Then, he added, "all I'll do is let my play speak for itself."
After the latest loss to the Raiders, the Broncos are 11-18 when Orton starts. Let that record speak for itself.
The Broncos and Orton, to be compassionate, aren't very good. Once again.
And people who paid good money in a bad economy have a right under the U.S. Constitution to boo, leave and chant the names Tim Tebow, Brady Quinn, Jay Cutler, John Elway and Thomas Jefferson. It's a great, free country, in which a quarterback can receive $8.879 million — possibly more than the combined salaries of all the "fans" in Section 542.
But members of the "media" claim those people are unsophisticated and must not boo or chant names, and they embarrassed Denver on national TV.
Years ago I was forced to attend the premiere of a Broadway musical entitled "In My Life," featuring a guitar player with Tourette's syndrome. The sellout audience whistled (the theater equivalent of booing), laughed, talked and walked out during the second act. I stayed for the entire production, 2 1/2 hours, that, regretfully, I can't recover in my life.
A review called the play "a disaster of disastrous proportions."
Those New York theater-goers didn't cheer their play and the lead actor, but nobody accused them of being unsophisticated. They were intelligent.
Broncos fans/sophisticates know when they see offensive and defensive play that is, well, offensive and defective.
Watching the Broncos' dreadful effort against the dreaded Raiders in another awful premiere, I wanted to boo too. Cheering — and, I assume, hissing, hooting and heckling — is not allowed in the press box.
If the Broncos don't want "loyalists" to vocalize their disapproval, win. If the Broncos' EFX doesn't want the throng to suggest a change in quarterbacks, then get rid of Tebow, and they'll hear a line reminiscent from a great Broadway musical. "Luck Be A Bronco."
The NFL trading deadline is five days before the Broncos' Oct. 23 game in South Florida — when the Broncos will hear the "Te-Bow" chants again as he is honored.
No matter, though, what the season-ticket holders or I might feel. Coach John Fox reiterated Tuesday that "Kyle is our starting quarterback." Naturally.
Fox knows what you and I know, but he (A) doesn't want to lose the players in the locker room, (B) understands that he can't keep Orton as a sulking backup on the bench, and (C) believes genuinely the Broncos will win with Orton and not with Tebow, who doesn't have much, if any, private support in the Broncos' chain of command.
To which I reply:
(A) What's to lose in the locker room? An offensive line that can't zone- or power- block, and defensive tackles and linebackers who can't penetrate or stop running backs?
(B) Which is preferable, a sulking Orton or an immobile Orton who doesn't perform under stress (interception toward the end of the first half that led to a 16-3, instead of 13-6, deficit) and a fresh-air drop of the football when he wasn't hassled and he had a wide-open receiver?
(C) The Broncos' apologists assert that the team wouldn't have won the game with Tebow at quarterback. The Broncos won a late December game at home with the T-mobile and a cast that reportedly wasn't as talented as 2011's. It's certain that the Broncos couldn't win with Orton at quarterback.
Where's Casper Tulowitzki?

good read....I do declare, I am absolutely dumbstruct by the conclusion by some that Tebow cant play...He hasnt proven that to anybody in a real game has he? However, Kyle Orton has. I will not listen to any more apologists for Orton. He needs to leave NOW or the Broncos organization will be broken more than any of us can imagine right now. If I were the owner of the Broncos, I would step in right now and protect the bottom line. After all, the only reason this is a 'professional sport' is because of the money. This team is going to bleed future revenue all year long if they dont make a change now. Maybe trade Tebow, release Orton, try Quinn and bring up Weber to #2. I dont really think that will work of course, but Orton staying the remainder of the year will definitely not work.

Can Kyle win a playoff game if we got there?
Wait, better question: Has anyone ever thought that the horrible running game and bad pass protection is a result of Orton's ineptitude? Denver Post writers have pointed out many times that opposing defenses know Orton freaks out when pressured, so they just put 8 men in the box and run downhill at him. Which, in turn will result in a bad running game.Rockin Mile High Stadium on a fall Sunday - best place in sports

Orton will play until the Broncos are eliminated from postseason consideration.... I am 100% confident that we will not see Tebow priot to that, barring injury, and we may see Quinn first.A super bowl victory is the only thing that matters in a season. So to show improvement you have to get closer than we were last year. So the AFCC game is a good answer if we only match what we did last year it is a failure. The Giants were 9-7 and won it all so record or first round bye mean nothing unless you win it all-
#87Birdman wrote it- adding Manning, the Broncos should be held to it, and certain posters think otherwise and we know who you are.....

To be honest... The Broncos have made some dumb draft choices over the last few years. We don't know if Tebow is a bust because he's only played 3 games, yet we have what some would consider busts like Ayers and Moreno playing every game... This years draft only produced one viable success Von Miller,,, we drafted everything but a DT that we needed so bad. It seems like the Bronco organization has been nothing but counter productive, the fans cry for D line help and what do they do, they didnt draft a Dlinsmen till the 7th round..
The fans called for Tebow to start because we already know what Ortons can or can't do, what do the Broncos do, give Orton the job even though they were trying to trade him...
Maybe the Bronco fans should start using reverse psychology,,, Start chanting Orton Orton,,, then the Broncos Fo will start Tebow,,, flood the board for EFX to draft SS and they will do the opposite and draft DT's....sigpic

This makes me sad.
"I'm playing the best football of my career." Then, he added, "all I'll do is let my play speak for itself.""It's been all business. Everybody's asking me where I'm living. I been living over here, living here at the facility."

but to answer your first question. i dont know.
to answer your second question. he played better than i thought he would under those circumstances. thats not saying i was impressed. hopefully the blocking on the run and pass is better this next game and we will see what happens. if you watched the same game i did the o-line had no push on the run and let people sail through the line.

Dead on Woody. I laughed a little at the part about losing the Locker Room:
'What's to lose in the locker room? An offensive line that can't zone- or power- block, and defensive tackles and linebackers who can't penetrate or stop running backs?' A bunch of scrubs on the O-Line/D-Line outside of a few guys.
I'm really glad we passed on guys like Pouncey in the 09 draft to draft guys like Walton.sigpic

But no, Walton's a gamer, he's our guy, he's part of the system...
Shame on us for not offering that guy huge money.
